Fresh and Exciting
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Caught this one on TV -- glad I didn't pay to see it. The Heartbreak Kid is pretty awful.
Usually I'm not a big Farrelly brothers fan, but I did enjoy this film. Ben Stiller is good in the lead, and Malin Ackerman plays her role very well, a very good fit. But I really think Michelle Monaghan was the best here, in my personal opinion at least. The humor for me was spotty at times, and of course I wasn't a very big fan of what Ben Stiller's character was doing in the movie, but the movie as a whole was still entertaining. I think the script was well written, sure it wasn't the best in the world, and there were times when the humor didn't really work for me but overall I think it was good. If you enjoy a funny/fairly entertaining comedy film, then I think you'll like The Heartbreak Kid. The sex scenes were a bit over-the-top and I think they were awkward instead of what the filmmakers were going for, which was of course, funny. Also I didn't really like the way the very end turned out (Eva Longoria cameo). And the reason is that I just didn't think it was very tasteful. I would've preferred the movie ending right before that scene. But other than that, I think it was a good time. 7/10.
The best thing about this film is that Jerry Stiller and Polly Holiday are in the cast. ***************** **************** ************** ***SPOILER** ***SPOILER* ***SPOILER ********* ****** *** * Stiller plays an infantile man who gets his dream girl without trying. His character is really gross: picks up said dream girl during his honeymoon then stalks her by breaking into her home because "the heart wants what the heart wants." To make him sympathetic, "bitches be crazy" gets repeated throughout the film, and Malin Ackerman, who plays Stiller's wife, is made visually unappealing by giving her a third-degree sunburn, complete with blisters, along with a deviated septum through which she spouts liquid and carne asada at inopportune times. Malin. Ackerman. Even with the make-up and slapstick, she's freaking gorgeous, but this film assigns a woman's worth based on appearance. Consequently, the women you're supposed to hate are telegraphed via visual cues such as preposterous plastic surgery or untrimmed pubic hair. Also, it's unfunny.
A tip for the producers... people who like to laugh don't normally consider watching painful scenes as something conducive to humor. :-)I personally thought that her getting sunburned was an unnecessary part to the whole story and even the inclusion of "another woman" in the whole thing... it would have been really funny on its own to just watch his whole interaction with Lila with him not knowing her well enough and all the quirks that go along with that. Bringing the other girl into the scene and then even the girl at the end of the movie made it more into a "drama" than a comedy and people were at the edge of their seat hoping he would not get caught and squirming when he did and the girls were heartbroken. Not to mention the whole jelly fish scene... ewwww... gross! I literally wanted to leave the theater gagging when I saw that one with that ugly horrible clingy thing hanging from his back knowing how painful it must've been... I don't think anyone hated Ben Stiller's character THAT much to warrant something like that. Sorry...not impressed.
