The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.
It is a shame that Stephen Norrington's directing career was buried by Extraordinary Gentlemen, since he could've pulled off some interesting things! As his directing debut this is a fairly strong movie, and with Blade he showed that he did have what it took... If only he had avoided LoEG!!Sure, the plot isn't anything special nor are the effects that spectacular... But they work, and workable practical effects are always better than naff CGI! Brad Dourif is also always a pleasure to watch, even though it seems that he's been typecast into slimebag roles for a lot of his career. The other actors also give decent performances, and didn't make me cringe... Well, not too often, anyway. ^^All in all, "Death Machine" is, if not a gem of a B-movie, at least a solid performer for friends of the genre. It recycles known cliches but remained entertaining for its runtime (111min UK version) and thus I give it a recommendation.
I have to be honest, I really wasn't expecting much when I hit the play button for 1994's "Death Machine". At the very least I thought it might be good for a few unintentional laughs like many direct-to-video films are. But what I got instead was actually a pretty entertaining and thrilling sci-fi gem. The story takes place sometime in the distance future, where a corrupt weapons corporation has come under fire for the deaths of several people when one of its killer robots malfunctions and goes rouge. As a result, a new CEO by the name of Hayden Cale (the beautiful Ely Pouget from 1991's revival of "Dark Shadows") is brought in to clean things up. But she soon gets more than she bargained for when she crosses swords with the person who really calls the shots, eccentric and psychotic weapons designer Jack Dante (played by the voice of Chucky himself, Brad Dourif). Once he realizes his power is being threatened, Jack does what any twisted weapon designer would do: Build and unleash the ultimate killing machine on the corporate executives! Things only get more interesting when a group of peace activists break into to destroy the headquarters only to get sucked into the nightmare instead. From there it's a battle of survival as our friends navigate through a treacherous high rise building with the death machine hot on their trail. It all might sound a bit cheesy and truth be told it is. However it is the good type of cheesiness, the kind that is charming and can only happen when the right combination happens. A big part of that combination is the actors involved. Clearly this is not the most Oscar worthy plot ever written, but that doesn't stop everyone involved from giving everything they got to their roles, especially Brad Dourif. With his constant on screen charisma, he is able to breath life into a character that is both insane and yet fascinating as he plots murder and plays with his toys. Ely Pouget plays the strong female character with great relish as she struggles to overcome the situation she's in. One should also congratulate the actors who play the peace activists, John Sharian and Martin McDougall, since we come to actually care about them. And of course, what good would a movie about an ultimate killing machine be if it didn't include a good kick-ass machine to go with it and man do we get it here. I don't won't to reveal too much about it since that would spoil the surprise. All I'll say is that in a genre that has seen more than its share of killing machines, the filmmakers here manage to create something unique, cool, and from your worst nightmare to boot! Plus the movie has good, crisp direction from director Stephen Norrington. Plus, there is that intangible movie magic at work here that only makes things all the more better. So if any of this sounds to your liking, give "Death Machine" a try; if your someone who likes cheesy but good flicks, you won't regret it.
"Death Machine" was actually a nice surprise of a movie. Sure it is a spoof on movies such a "Robocop", "Aliens", "Terminator", "Die Hard" and movies in that caliber, but it was so much fun to watch. The story in "Death Machine" is about Jack Dante who works at a big corporation, who unleash a killing machine that he has been working on in secret after he becomes fired from his job. And it is up to a small group of people to stand up to this ultimate killer and stop it before it kills them."Death Machine" was loads of fun to watch because it was so cheesy and campy. However, they had lots of nice stuff in the movie, lots of nice details and actually had decent enough props, sets and outfits. What I loved the most, personally, was the armored robotic suit that they put the guy in; in lots of scenes you could see it was just plastic covered foam he was wearing, as it was creasing and wrinkling as he bent and moved around. It was hilarious.Take a look at the names of the people in the movie; John Carpenter, Weyland, Yutani, Scott Ridley, etc. that was just amusing. Lots of fun references here, and if you are an avid movie-watcher, then you are bound to pick up on lots of hints and references here, there and everywhere. For a movie of this type, they had actually managed to put together a great cast ensemble, lots of faces that will be familiar to you if you watch a good deal of movies. It should be said, that the movie was being carried by Brad Dourif who played Jack Dante."Death Machine" has a lot of action and actually have a good amount of entertainment value. I was surprised at the movie, as I had expected it to be a very, very low budget Sci-Fi movie. I was thoroughly entertained by the movie and must say that it was actually a great homage to various movies over the years. If you haven't seen "Death Machine" yet, get to it. Watch it for the cheesy movie that it is. Don't take it too serious. Watch it for all the references to other movies (if you are a movie fanatic). Watch it for the foamy body armor-suit. Watch it for the sheer fun that it is. Just watch it.
This movie is really far from a great or interesting one but it's also a movie that starts to somewhat gets better as it progresses. It was a great movie that they decided on not making this movie a too straight or serious one. It's a movie with some quirky and comical moments. Had they decided to play this movie straight, it would had been a real bad and ridicules B-movie, with an obviously not too high budget. The movie instead now at times is even more of a spoof than a good movie on its own really. The movie is basically a whole bunch of many different genre movies thrown together, only made more entertaining to watch. It for most part makes "Death Machine" a pretty fun movie to watch but it also doesn't exactly surpasses the level of average. The script, the effects, the acting, it's all being pretty average. It's all good enough but not quite enough for the movie to stand out. I can see why this movie has a sort of a steady cult following but like basically almost every cult-favorite movie, the movie itself isn't exactly anything too great itself. It also really takes awhile for the movie to actually start off and become a good and interesting one. It wasn't about well halve way through that the movie finally really started to get my attention. It was Stephen Norrington directing debut and he must have got some attention with it, since his next directed movie would be the blockbuster "Blade", which in all honesty is the only real true great movie he has ever directed so far.All good and fun enough, especially when you're into the genre but also far from a great or perfect movie really.6/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
