A Greek tour guide named Georgia attempts to recapture her kefi (Greek for mojo) by guiding a ragtag group of tourists around Greece and showing them the beauty of her native land. Along the way, she manages to open their eyes to the wonders of an exotic foreign land while beginning to see the world through a new set of eyes in the process.

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
If you are looking for a "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" sequel, this isn't it. It is a totally different premise. Even though it's not fair to compare it to "MBFGW" because it is so different, I actually like this movie more. Love the humor of this movie. I have watched it several times for "girls night". The romance storyline is sweet and the Greek history aspect is educational in a fun way. Also a good choice if you like to travel. I've never been a huge fan of Richard Dreyfuss, until this movie. He's sweet and lovable in such a way that now I enjoy him more in other movies too. I also enjoy all the sub characters a lot. The stereotypes of the various countries are amusing. Watching everyone develop and change adds to the overall tone of the movie. A little predictable, but still enjoyable. A group of mismatched folks from around the world coming together and becoming friends and pulling together never gets old, in my book.
Movies run the gammit: history, comedy, tragedy. Some are masterpieces and some are down right awful. Then there are movies that you see and just want to be entertained and feel good about it. Such is the case of "My Life In Ruins".Yes, it's by the numbers and if you're the kind of person that finds the formula boring after 5 minutes then.....don't watch it.But sometimes you just go with it much like Nia Vardalos as her character of Georgia does. Don't take things so seriously. Just enjoy the ride. And such is the case with the story here. There is some great Greek scenery and the characters are stereotypical but so what? Looking past it's faults; it's an enjoyable movie.
This Big Fat Greek Tragedy is the most embarrassing thing to come out of the Eastern Mediterrranean since Prince Philip. Turgid and sappy, it's bad enough to make you smash plates over your own head. It's like "Mamma Mia!" without the songs, wit and charm, or "Shirley Valentine" after a full frontal lobotomy. Nia Vardalos, playing a professorial tour guide, is repeatedly informed, "You're not funny!" Those watching this movie will echo the sentiment as they slog their way through the clichés, predictable scenarios and failed attempts at humour. It's a bit like ouzo: seems like fun at the time but you'll no doubt regret it in the morning.
Predictable. The first word that came to mind after the first 30 minutes or so of watching this movie. Cute, funny...sure...but it was also way too ridiculous. Are all tourists who travel to other countries act like this array of people do here? Most have little or no interest or respect for anything they have traveled so far to look at? The entire group was better suited to tour Walmart or the local flea market...they would have all been thrilled to do it. I get that this is a love story of sorts...we get that too from the moment the bus driver comes into the picture. She is a lost soul...and he is there with wise things to say...wow...romance happens. I really like the actress/writer in this film...but all her movies seem to be repeats of each other...just some of the details are changed around to fit into this story. The way they presented some of the tourists seemed a little too disrespectful...they were made to be over the top characters I guess...but none of their jokes or performances were very good. I spent part of the movie talking with my friends who were also watching the film with me. It just did not keep our interest for long. I like Richard Dryfuss and some of the other actors in this film...but I am not sure why they chose to do the parts they did. A light hearted comedy it is...but it is also a poorly made film for the most part too. Most guys would say this is a chick flick..or a date night flick...so don't expect the men in your lives to want to sit through it without falling asleep.
