PlatinumRead Just so...so bad
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
Sarita Rafferty There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Edwin The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
jodyfranz I haven't rewatched this one in a long time. This is a great mobster movie, up there with Goodfellas and GodFather. The acting is great, although I found Joe Pesci as a lady's man a little hard to believe and doubt he would have been cast in todays Hollywood (you know if he was still young that is, but he was on fire in the 90's). I am not a fan of Sharon Stone but she is excellent in this movie as well. For a movie that is just under 3hrs it moves pretty fast, has lots of action gets pretty tense near the end and there are some brutally violent scenes. It also takes place in the 70's and 80's so everything looks dated and it's supposed to so this movie ages really well. I am adding this to my list of movies I will or would recommend to rewatch over the years.
edwardcooper-92204 Casino is Martin Scorsese out and out. Even if you showed me this film randomly I can look at the traits and say this is a Scorsese movie. The setting is hedonistic Las Vegas and the story is about some friends who decide to setup their empire on the sands. The underlying themes of greed, power, corruption are all evident here and of course the actors shine- Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods and about a dozen more have seldom been this good. The gorgeous shots of the casinos with Scorsese's stylist approach are amazing. Go watch Casino- It is one of the best films of the 90s.
bettycjung 3/13/18. They definitely don't make movies like this anymore. This movie is a testament to how great a director Scorsese is, to keep you enraptured for 3 hours watching how 3 people self-destruct with Las Vegas as the backdrop. Based on the nonfiction book by Pileggi, who also wrote the screenplay (as well as the one for Goodfellas), it is really the history of the old Las Vegas Strip, when mobsters and the Mafia ran the everything. Definitely worth catching!
classicsoncall Teaming Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in a gangster flick is pretty much a no-brainer, but I couldn't help thinking, especially in the latter hour of the movie, that the picture tried to be just a bit too ambitious for it's own good. At three hours, the picture loses some of it's edge, even with Pesci's manic and over the top characterization of Nicky Santoro, a mob hit man sent to Vegas to keep an eye on Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (De Niro) as the boss of the new Tangiers Hotel. The scene with Tony Dogs (Carl Ciarfalio) with his head in a vise will make you glad you live in a different universe from these guys. The surprise role in this picture had to be that of Ginger McKenna, portrayed by Sharon Stone. If you never thought she had much range as an actress she'll probably change your mind here, especially by the time she's had it with Ace and goes into that trashing, hysterical fit before she gets thrown out of the house. I thought it was a nifty touch when the film makers threw in that Rolling Stones cover of 'Heart of Stone' in an early scene between Ace and Ginger. That was perfect.Overall, not a bad gangster flick, but if ever remade, I'd recommend eliminating most or all of the narration by the principals, and let the action speak for itself. That, and a critical eye for all that's unnecessary to pare the story down to it's essentials. Keep De Niro, Pesci and Stone though, they know how to turn up the heat when you need it most.
