what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Hey Ram!!! This movie defines class. Plot Review : Its truly engaging how Saket Ram(KH) after being a victim of the Bengal Riots is made to believe by Hindu Extremist(AK) that MK.Gandhi is responsible for all the Chaos. How the next sequence of events make Saket Ram realize by his own conscience, Amjad Ali Khan (SRK) that Gandhi is the only sanity remaining is the plot of the movie.Acting: Kamal Haasan portrays his character in such a great fashion hardly ever seen before : Jubilant, Grief Stricken, Innocent, As an Aveneger , In Severe Dilemma , Man Reformed the range is awesome. Atul Kulkarni as Shriram Abhyankar leaves a very strong impression and was very rightly awarded the National Award. Shahrukh,Saurabh Shukla, naseeruddin shah, Hema Malini, Girish Karnad, Rani Mukherjee , Vasundra Das and all the well known faces have given their best.Pros : Good Plot, Nice Acting, Technically Brilliant = Great Film. Cons : Too much gore, more than average sexual content.

Kamal Haasan's body of works can be broadly divided into two categories- Hey Ram and non Hey Ram. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, and a film is worth a 1000 pictures. I say a movie like Hey Ram is worth a 1000 films. This film depicts the culture of India like no other, which ranges from traditional Iyengar, Bengali and Marathi to conventional British and Gandhian. Not a single scene, line or character is wasted in this film. Being a period film, art direction becomes critical for description of the story. Right from the old Pears calendar in Birla House to the British cement advertisement in Calcutta, from the Tanjore paintings in Srirangam to the vehicles and instruments in the cities, not one object or concept is out of place! Many films fail here, including Lagaan which had 6 balls bowled per over instead of 9.With an cast of India's finest actors Like Kamal Haasan, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Om Puri, Hema Malini, Rani Mukherjee, Atul Kulkarni and Shah Rukh Khan, one cannot complain about the performances. Perhaps the biggest asset to the film is its refusal to employ black and white characterization. Not one character in this epic is projected as an all good person and everyone has their own selfish reasons in life!

The premise is fantastic. India has just been partitioned and communal disharmony is at its peak. Kamal Haasan's character, Saaket Ram, in a moment of madness following the death of his wife, decides to join the extremists and assassinate Gandhi. As the movie goes on, Ram gets closer to the Mahatma and begins to understand him better. The narrative, sadly, loses steam after an hour and begins to get repetitive beyond a point. Even so, it is one of the most honest portrayals of the Mahatma and for that reason alone, the movie is a must-watch. Kamal Haasan is as good as always, though it is far from his best performance. It's a pity the kissing scenes in the movie made more headlines than its stand on the partition and Gandhi. That just goes to show you all that is wrong with Bollywood and its audience.

An excellent work by Padmasree KamalHasan! No:1 performance by Kamal proves once again , he is the best actor in the whole globe! The movie is a tribute to the society. Very well pictured. The movie is moving with slow pace through out. Though at times we get the feeling that its gonna pace up, but it still moves in slow pace which might have disappointed some viewers and hence the movie couldn't do well in box office!I think the background music ram .. ram.. hey hey ram ram.. should have been played through out the movie which would have made this more thrilling!Anyways this is a masterpiece! Kamal,RaniMukherji, Shahrukh all done a good job!Cijo Thomas
