The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
I PVRed this movie to watch after seeing countless previous on the movie channels and I'm glad I did! I went into this not expecting much and was very, very pleasantly surprised. It did remind me a little bit of a lighter version of '8 Mile', and is an inspiring story nonetheless (so much so that I had to write a review - which I never do). Main actress and supporting cast are great and I felt myself crying happy tears at the end. To the nay sayers of this film, they need to drop their negativity at the door and open their heart to the vulnerable beauty that is shown withing this film.
Best movie of 2017. Awesome soundtrack and great performances from everyone in the cast!
Just watched this movie on my flight from sydney to LA and just loved it! i am a very frequent movie goer and expect a lot from films. i loved the story of patti and her dreams, the family dynamics at home and socio-economic issues touched upon throughout the film. on the long flight, i found myself going back to the film 3-4 times and watching my favorite scenes over and over - the gates of hell magical recording session w/nana, the pharmacy scene, the competition of course. i work in music and thought the depiction of patti's relationship & gift with the lyrics she wrote and sang were realistic. thank you for the wonderful movie- congrats to the cast and director & writers for doing such a great job.
One of my new favorites! Distinctly original without being an overinflated artsy piece of crap like what's out these days. The music was absolutely amazing. I don't even really like rap that much, but I wouldn't call the music "typical" rap. More like a fusion of rock, pop, and rap. I'd watch this movie again, and I don't say that pften these days.
