The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.

"3 Idiots" was such a flawless movie with a great cast & superb direction that when it was announced that Shankar was going to remake it in Tamil, many might have had apprehensions in their minds about how it might turn out.Considering the current crop of young stars in Tamil cinema the three chosen to reprise the roles of Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi & Madhavan were the best of the lot. And they have done justice too.Shankar's remake of "3 Idiots" , "Nanban" is a very well done remake with certain punches added to suit the Tamil audience.It is new terrain for Shankar remaking a movie but he has done a good job of it. There are trademark Shankarisms here & there but overall he has remained faithful to the original. And along with Karky , Shankar shines in dialogs too.Dialogues are witty, informative (I don't know how many of the viewers knew about "Jamais vu "before), touching with typical sarcasm of Shankar movies here & there.Vijay has underplayed a great deal & it has done wonders. In the initial parts he does reminds one of Aamir Khan but as the movie unfolds he sparkles. Be it in the comical situations or in sentimental parts , he shows one & all what we have been missing over the past few years. He rocks in the hospital sequences especially when Jiiva starts responding and in the delivery sequence just after the baby gets resuscitated.Jiiva has done a good supporting part & his one-liners are hilarious to the hilt. He has lots of witty ones to mouth. In the sequence in the classroom where he does an "induction motor" he brings down the roof.Srikanth has tried hard & comes out unscathed. As a narrator of the story his voice is soothing.Sathyaraj has done what Boman Irani did in the original mimicking most of his mannerisms. He also hams a bit but overall it is a decent performance from the veteran after a very long time.This movie will be a turning point in Sathyan's career for sure. As the irritatingly haughty "Silencer" he has performed well. It is definitely his career best so far.Ileana has nothing much to do not that she promises much in the acting department. Andrea's voice somehow elevates her presence in the movie.S.J.Suryah & Anuya are adequate while Vasanth Vijay is miscast.Harris Jayaraj's songs are already chart-busters. "Aska laska" , "En nanban pola yaru macha" & "Heartile battery " are enjoyable numbers. His Background score is way better than many of his recent movies.Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography is awesome. If there is anything that outscores the original then it must be the cinematography. Welldone Manoj.Though the movie is 3 hours & more , one doesn't get the feeling of dragging anytime. That the movie manages to keep one engaged & involved over a period of more than 3 hours is in itself a great achievement by Shankar. On the whole, "Nanban" is a feel good entertainer with a pertinent message that will be lapped up by the family audience as well the student community in this festive season.Bottomline : All is well...!

The movie begins with two friends Jiiva ( as Sevarkodi) & Srikanth (as Venkat) going in search of their best friend (Vijay as Pari) who turned their life's.Sathyan (as Srivatsan) gets them to Ooty to meet Pari to show his vengeance with Pari. Here comes the Pakka Heroism song (En friend Ah Pola Yaaru Machan) in background while the friends go in search of their best friend and it is beautifully pictured(hats off to Shankar and Manoj Paramahamsan). There we go the flash back of the movie as Srikaanth narrates the entire flash back...WOWWWWW.....! what a narration! Special thumbs up to Srikaanth (beats Maddy :) ) .Sathyaraj as virus (Virumandi Santhanam)sparkles from scene one.Jiiva...what a timing Jiiva..u have 2Vadivelu, 2 Santhanam, 2 Vikveks within u....His timing jokes and drunken scene jokes are superb fun...The physics, chemistry,....etc between Srikaanth, Jiiva and Vijay works out perfectly (thats the strength of the script)Vijay carries the role of Aamir Khan...Aamir is one of the finest artists in this country..u cannot beat his performance but Vijay very nearly equaled Aamir performance but I saw only one drawback with Vijay...his macho physic doesn't suited his character ..he could have reduced weight but otherwise a very new and fresh Vijay(next door boy) and very cute..... sparkling in Nalla Nanban song and Climax...Supreb performance throughout ..Thalaivaaaaa..you are great...!Ileana seriously cool..many tell Ileana under performed but don't feel that she underperformed but she did a very neat job..I have become her fan after the movie.Harris scores in background...Sathyan is the real entertainer of the movie...U cannot explain his comedies...Sehwag Kaila batting Pitchum..Pazham Ballum Kedicha...Yosichi Parunga..Antha Mathiri..Pinnitaru Sathyan.The highlight of the movie is its message "don't follow success , follow excellence, success Will chase u" and the entire script is etched with that one line Which is very very true in these times.All parents and children's (above 12) must watch this movie.Shankar..! No words to say about him..Why he is directing movies in India.....he should have went to Hollywood...He is able to take action movies as well commercial movies with classical touch (Boys,Jeans, Kadhalan, of course Nanban). One of the best directors in India..oh..sorry world!Thanks to entire team , everybody...cannot mention everyones name (Resul Pookkutty , Antony, Milan..everybody did a great job)..Nanban--->A commercial film with message and a classical touch..I guarantee that everyone will feel like missing something while u leave theater...........(i.e) love towards the movie...

Saw Nanban movie in kamala theater (known as kamala cinemas now) 11:00 Am show.Thank god the Theatre has good parking facility and had a decent parking cost of 15 bucks unlike the theaters in the malls where you are charged about 20 ~ 25 bucks per hour.Sometimes we may spend more on parking ticket rather than the movie ticket itself.The sound system in the theater is not so good.I was sitting near the wall in the front set of rows. The speakers has caused me a headache . Also the movie theaters should stop frisking people and install metal detectors or something.The movie was not such a bad one considering vijay acted in it.Pluses of the movie:- ==>Sathyaraj acted well,he had done his homework and was good as the college principal.Jeeva and Srikanth essayed the roles of Vijay's friends very well. ==>The story line was nearly water tight but not air tight. ==>It is not the typical shankar movies about corruption etc: ==>The movie I believe is a faithful reproduction of the original "3 idiots". ==>Message of the movie "asking youngsters to apply themselves in areas of their interest" instead of going down the well trodden path is laudable. ==>Not a typical hodgepodge Vijay movie :-).Minuses of the movie:- ==>There was absolutely no chemistry between the lead pair.The lead pair (Vijay , Ileane)could not show much of facial expressions.Ileane looked a little anorexic. ==>The songs did not gel well with the movie.The lyrics were not catchy. Shankar did not pay much attention to the songs in this movie which I find is quite unusual. ==> People poking fun of srivatsan(sathyan) all the time was getting too tiresome to watch.The fart related jokes was a little retarded. ==>Old wine in new bottle.The age old urban legend that, "NASA spending a large amount of money to develop a pen that would write in the conditions experienced during spaceflight",has been retold through this movie.There is no point of including that story in the movie.Story:-Sathyan calls up Vijay's friends ( Jeeva and Srikanth) and asks them to meet him lying to them that he is with their dear friend Vijay and he is waiting to meet them.Instead he shows them a presentation of his achievements in life . After not being able to meet their dear friend who in this case happens to be Vijay start looking around for their long last friend.Vijay it seems doesn't keep in touch with them after their graduation from college . During their search for Vijay , the college days when the trio spent their times together is shown . It was shown as to how Vijay was really smart and was down to earth and witty .The flashback fails to explain as to why only these two were attracted to Vijay whereas the rest of the students did not interact a lot with vijay . Sathyaraj did a commendable role as the college principal . Back in the present,when they finally thought that they had nailed their dear friend's location that they find that their friend has impersonated another person (S.J.Surya) and did college on behalf of him.Jeeva and Srikanth come to know about the marriage of Ileana and her finance.They gate crash Ileana's wedding and tell her that she not betray her feelings for Vijay and marry a "Mr no good" / "cold hearted"' person like her would be husband.When they finally catch up with Vijay they realize his noble objective of starting a school where each student can realize his/her hidden potentials.Conclusion Though nothing new has been explored in this movie it can be watched once.It has a few good scenes.

i watched this movie yesterday. I gotta admit, for the first 1/2 hr I felt like watching a Tamil dubbed version of 3 Idiots with a different cast. It was THAT much similar.After"Heartile Battery", that feeling went away, and i actually started enjoying'Nanban'. First I have to talk about Vijay. Where the hell has he been all these years? Is this the same guy who tortured me in Sura, Villu, etc?First I have to talk about Vijay. Where the hell has he been all these years? Is this the same guy who tortured me in Sura, Villu, etc?I ♥ Vijay in Nanban.Even if his body language reminded me of Aamir (mostly in the 1st half), he still made Pari likable.Vijay looked CUTE in the ENTIRE film. Please remain like this for a couple more year ;)2nd person I loved in Nanban is Jeeva. I think he was the one who performed without having any shades of the original actor.Totally surprised by Srikanth. I had no hope on this guy initially, but he was actually pretty good!Sathyaraj and Sathyan played their roles well as Virus and Silencer respectively. Not much difference from the original.And Ileana. Wow, this girl is absolutely G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! Acting-wise, yes, she'snot that great Harris Jeyaraj's music was great, i loved the songs in the movie. BGM was OK. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography was top-notch.But the Teachers'Day scene was better in Nanban Absolutely hilarious! :D Anyone who's watched 3 Idiots can still watch and enjoy If you haven't seen 3 Idiots, then it's a MUST-WATCH film! Kudos to Director Shankar for bringing best movies like this in tamilcinema by remaking it without patchering the original.
