Planets: Four Variations of Detachment
May. 09,2014Ohad Milstein’s documentary follows four narratives of voluntary loneliness which traverse distant, cooler orbits around the warm Israeli sun. A butterfly collector, a man with a bionic hand, a self-sufficient family living in the outer reaches of a desolate forest, and a pet taxidermist. All of these individuals inhabit their own respective spaces and are wholly devoted to their world and nowhere else. Between them is one man with his camera who, via the people and the places explores the emotional, artistic, and technological conditions that allow and sustain the very existence of his own filmmaking.

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
