In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

"Die kluge Bauerntochter" from a little more then five years ago is another fairytale adaptation for ARD and ZDF based on the very famous works of the Brothers Grimm. It's stars Anna Maria Mühe the orphan to Jenny Gröllmann and Ulrich Mühe ("Lives of Others"). She was actually a good choice for this role as the farmer's daughter needs to be a a somewhat different potential queen or princess and Mühe fits that role nicely. She is no traditional beauty, but there's a certain warmth surrounding her.As most fairytale films, the cast is pretty good. Mehmet and Melles are among Germany's more known actors and the smaller supporting players are all experienced established actors as well. Sadly, Mühe really is the only one in the cast who really shines. The others are forgettable or over the top in a bad way. Maybe that is the reason why I felt that, even at 60 minutes only, this film dragged quite a bit. Sooner or later I will probably see some of the other fairytale collaborations between Eissler and Kreis and I hope these turn out better.
