Stolen
November. 03,2023Stolen is an insight into the Mother and Baby Homes scandal that ricocheted around the world and sparked a government inquiry into the fate of unmarried women who fell pregnant in 20th century Ireland. The discovery that 796 babies had died without burial records in the Tuam Mother and Baby Home alone was followed by evidence of their interment in a sewage works below a playground. A vista of horror opened up for what happened at other institutions run by religious orders, such as Bessborough in Cork and Sean Ross Abbey in Tipperary. Survivors, including mothers and witnesses, speak out.

As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
