It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
What a god awful film. Why can't I give it less than 1 star? Though it would be a fun film to watch with the kids, but boy was I wrong. Now the kids won't let me chose anymore films. Where to start. Plot. Copy/paste other low budget z list movie. Acting. Not sure if it can be classed as 'acting' as it is sooo bad. My kids put on a better display trying to get out of school. Characters. Basic, no depth and just there to say the words. Continuity. All over the place. So many continuity flaws it would need it's own IMDb server to list. Do yourself, and your kids a favour. Stay well clear of this one. It really isn't worth it.
Never a good sign when the opening credits start with "The Asylum Presents..." Three crack soldiers are deployed to fight giant sea monsters from attacking the USA using massive manned Transformer type robots. Terrible, wooden acting on display here, cheap CGI effects & incredibly dumb plot, plus there's not actually a great deal of monster action, so it's pretty boring too. It's a pity this wasn't made in Japan as they specialize in this sort of thing. Best avoided, a total waste of time.
I thought it would be a continuation of Pacific Rim which was great! I haven't been so disappointed by a movie since I was a kid. The acting was very poor, cinematography was by far first grade level. I couldn't watch past the first 20 minutes of the movie. Who did the CG?? Might as well been watching a cartoon, the Jaeger's did not look real. Definitely didn't live up to Pacific Rim!!!
The first hint one should get is that the original title of this movie was "Atlantic Rim"-- apparently trying to grab the few viewers that might mistake it for "Pacific Rim". That they have now changed the title could be only for one of two reasons: 1) Legal troubles with the Pacific Rim people or 2) Atlantic Rim got such a bad reputation they're trying to re-release it under a different name. This is one of the few movies that I would give 3 stars on special effects alone (not great, but interesting)... except that I don't really want to raise the current 1.7 rating. So I chose to not rate it at all, because even a 2 would up the scale a little. The script, acting, logic flaws, senseless storyline... it all adds up to a "rainy Saturday afternoon when the internet is out" movie. But then, anyone who watches a giant robots vs sea monsters movie made by Asylum and expects anything but goofy really is not acquainted with this company. I gave this one a chance thinking "Hey, even Asylum can't totally ruin a giant robots vs sea monsters movie." And I was right. They didn't totally ruin it; they just mostly ruined it. It did contain giant robots and sea monsters after all.Seriously though, recognize there is a reason for that (current) 1.7 rating, and spend time on a hobby or with the family. There, I just saved you a couple of hours out of your life that may have been spent in Asylum drivel. If you're still tempted to watch this, just remember: TRUST THE 1.7... TRUST THE 1.7...
