Powerful
Memorable, crazy movie
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
First things first. This is one of the most annoying, irritating, intolerable piece of cinema i have ever watched. Period. The only reason why I finished the movie, rather than switching channels was coz i was curious to see how pathetic and appalling it will get.Good intentions? well yes, may be. Good attempt? no. good film? a big no.And i had zero expectations from this movie to begin with. And it turned out to be worse than that.Just a simple point, I just finished watching the full movie, from start to end. And I have no idea who Bobbys mother was, in this film, Supriya Pathak or Tanvi Azmi. Its that sort of a mess. Did bobby's father have two wives? and is supriya pathak a Hindu or a Muslim? no idea. This thing is totally unrelated to the main story, but i m just trying to highlight how confusing things are in this movie.Talking about the main story, OMG, why does it take Vidya so long, i mean for lala to make some silly comment to realize that her anonymous client might be involved in something shady. I am looking for a young girl, find her for me, i will not tell u anything about who i m, why i want to find her, why i cant use any other means. I mean, come on. I hate to use profanities, but its just total bull sh%t. Dumb as a donkey detective, how am i supposed to relate to that? And another thing I didn't understand is, what exactly is the financial status of Kiran Kumar? is he some millionaire? who supplies stationary? who left his children in an orphanage? and fled the country? and never came back? was he rich before he left or became rich after leaving? does any of the above make any sense to you? to me, it didn't.Pure torture.A few good things, i feel i need to mention here. Vidya does try her best in this awful film. and the guy who plays her hero, is cute and acts well. bobbys sidekicks are also OK. I want to see a woman centric film, and this i guess was one such attempt, so really if u believe in woman power, etc, u r supposed to applaud such a venture. but its hard to do that when its such a god awful senseless story.
Plot overall is average but still watchable. But the lingo which is the key doesn't strike that much. The lead characters speak very bad "Hyderabadi". Many of the not so significant characters nailed it though. Misses the whole point of the movie being set in Hyderabad. Vidya who is always lauded for her versatile acting has somehow fallen short in impressing us with this one, its very disappointing. Even a senior actor like Kiran Kumar fails to impress. Tanvi Azmi did really well in this movie. I am very curious as to why she (Tanvi) doesn't get many roles as a supporting character often. She was great in her TV series Family No. 1. Benaf Dadachanji looks promising and might prove to be great given the right break.
This might turn out to be a different experience for those not from Hyderabad. I am. Lived my entire life over here. The accent used by most characters in this flick is better than perhaps the ones used by 'Well done Abba', but doesn't come close to the ones used by the nincompoops in 'The Angrez'. Pity, since that could have been the source of a lot of humor, along with people like us feeling at home with the characters, instead of being reminded that the cast had to take lessons/classes to pass themselves off as Hyderabadis. In terms of quality though, with most of the technical aspects, including paying close attention to small details (Bilquis' shoes all the way!!!), I would have to give it up to newbie Samar Sheikh. The background score's strong as well, and that sure was refreshing. Pity he did not have a better yarn to spin (one of the best portions for me was the reference to Karamchand, a carrot and Kitty) around all of this stuff that was greenlit by Reliance. All the performances are top-notch, including most of the supporting ones. A few highlights: Kiran Kumar gets to chew on scenery after a long time, and the screen needs more runtime from this great actor. Rajendra Gupta's good, but he does his concerned oldie schtick, and it has gotten pretty old - but I'm sure they're not giving him better options. Bajwa's pretty bad. Zarina Wahab doesn't have enough screen-time. Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi (with her progressively scarier make-up with each movie - I cannot believe I used to have a crush on her during her stint on TV in 'Jeevan Rekha / Lifeline), Ali Fazal are good, and make their mark in different sequences. Hyderabad, of ye old city, has been captured very well, and most of the lines are well-written. However, like how Alia Bhatt was miscast as a South Indian in '2 States', Vidya falters in the beginning, with her put-on Hyderabadi accent, but steadies herself as the movie went by, or it's that syndrome of our getting used to something just because its being repeated over the course of the movie's running time. Ah, the runtime! This has to be one of those frequent occasions where a movie with a 2 hour running time feels longer than it should. That's just because there's no meat on its bones. All in all, a feeble attempt at humor, going noir, and setting it in Hyderabad. The scope, for the detective humor/crime genre was immense, and even the city-dekho aspect just vacillated from Moghalpura to Avasa, with nothing in between. Even the biryani taste-kar sequence could've name-dropped a few of the familiar spots, but they missed that train too. While appreciating the focus on maintaining the tempo of the narrative and not digressing from the tale being told, the only problem is with the scope the tale chooses to limit itself too. Even in terms of denouement, a feeble whimper's all we get.A few sequences that showcase how street-smart our lass is, while also showcasing her smarts with trying to get out of a particular sticky situation kinda shows us that with more sequences as those, this one could've been something different, something kick-a$$. But....that's just those 2 sequences.Make no mistake, I welcome movies of this genre - it's just a pity that the attempt is not much to write home about. Worth 1 watch at the local multiplex for sure, but you wouldn't do badly if you chose the Home- viewing option either.
Indian Cinema has certainly evolved over the years with experimental movies Queen, Holiday , Filmistaan to name few. Bobby Jasoos succeeds in experimenting the truth but final act pauses the entire movement of the film.Bobby Jasoos tells the story of a wanna-be-detective(Vidya Balan) who has been given a secret assignment to search for people whose identities are provided by a multi-millionaire unknown guy. Directed by Samir Shaikh , Bobby Jasoos starts off well with few hilarious moments in the first half with the doubt factor remains till the end. Unfortunately , the movie tumbles in the climax which could have been made better. Editing is loose. Screenplay is weak . Cinematography and art direction is simple. Music is below par. Background score does not gel well with film. Dialogues are good. It is Vidya Balan's show all the way. The actress gets into the character of Bobby Jasoos and gives a performance with aplomb.Overall, a very brave niche flick with commendable first half and not so engrossing later half. Average 2.5/5
