Trailer Synopsis Cast

In the guest-house of sister Klivia, the inhabitants are very cheerful and good-hearted persons whose open communal lifestyle is contrasted with the life of somewhat nasty and complaining neighbour Mr Boordevool. Boordevool has spent ages looking for reasons to shut the guest-house. One day a girl from the guest-house meets a nice young guy Gerrit. Sister Klivia lets Gerrit stay regardless of him being a thief. Will that give a chance to the insinuations of the neighbour?

'Yes sister, no sister' as well as 'Minoes' are film adaptations of books and plays by Annie M.G. Schmidt. She is to the Dutch what Astrid Lindgren is to the Swedish. Both 'yes sister' and 'Minoes' have really touched the atmosphere in Schmidts books. You have read them when you were young and life was good and simple, and so are the movies. 'Yes sister' was also a very famous show in the 1960's. Most of the Dutch of that generation know the songs by heart, while other songs like 'mijn opa' (My grandfather! No one like him in all of Europe!) belong to our national song culture. It's not just the actors that start singing in the movie, is is the audience as well. Loes Luca, the leading actress in 'Yes sister' is the perfect choice to play the role of sister Klivia. She is from the city of Rotterdam and still has the Rotterdam accent. She's sharp, bossy, witty, weird and has a very personal charm about her. The other characters in 'yes sister' are also perfectly casted. Watching this movie is seeing some of the best actors we have in the Netherlands: Arjan Ederveen, Paul de Leeuw, Olga Zuiderhoek, Paul Kooij and others.

Shu-fen's comment has very intelligent observations, i agree entirely and won't try to surpass his enthusiast, excellent review. I am familiar with the beloved Dutch TV series from the late sixties that was behind this film and have enjoyed this remake, true to the spirit of the original as it is, immensely. The speed and inventiveness in this film are incredible, one slapstick-like scene after another, songs and musical-like scenes bursting out everywhere all the time, and yet, very clear cut small miracles of natural acting abound, intimate scenes, close ups, small conversations, never too long... Viewers from abroad will fail to recognize and enjoy the nice local accents of various Dutch towns in the speech of some actors, but that's always something inevitably "lost in translation"... - willem ouwerkerk

The plot is goofy and delightful, the musical numbers are implausible and silly (just like any other musical) and it hardly matters at all that the whole thing is in German with subtitles. In fact, the subtitles for the song lyrics are either terrible translations or else the lyrics are just awful to begin with. But who cares? The tunes are upbeat and happy and the dancing is fun and nicely staged with little touches one would never see in a Hollywood film. The Gay bits are light weight but fittingly move the plot along providing a villain and a love interest. Put your brain in PARK; no thinking is required; just let the whole thing wash over you like a dream that makes you laugh out loud. You'll want to own this to watch again and to spring it on special friends.

I'm usually one who can appreciate light-hearted kookiness and I've enjoyed my share of musicals...but this movie is virtually unwatchable. It rapidly declines from a mildly amusing Singing In The Rain-like song and dance number into such over-the-top unfunny vaudevillian absurdity that I had to leave the theater after about 40 minutes. I felt like I was watching an awful high school production.Although he is inexplicably raved about by others here, the character of Boordevol stands out as the most unbearable, by far. This painfully shrill caricature destroys what little charm the film manages to produce; making me wince every time he appeared on the screen.Large portions of the audience around me found endless hilarity in this film but I just didn't get it...at all. It is, simply put, one of the most ridiculous films I've ever seen.
