Too much of everything
Absolutely Brilliant!
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Lakshya revolves around Karan Shergil, who is a carefree college guy with a girlfriend. The character of Karan is somewhere like all of us, as he does not thinks too much about whats going on around him, does not have a very cordial relationship with his typical Indian father and gets constantly compared to his brother. The film is beautifully shot especially the scenes of kargil.Farhan Akhtar has done a very good job with this film, and for me this is his best work till date. Music of the film is good too but the background score is awesome. It gives you all the kicks and goosebumps in the combat and war scenes.Since the dialogues of the film are written by javed akhtar therefore the film keeps you gripped with the story line.Amitabh Bachchan is perfect, his awesome articulation of the amazing lines written by javed akhtar is unprecedented.Amitabh should have gotten a "best supporting actor"prize for this movie.Priety zinta and all other actors are fine too. Needless to mention about the fine work done by Hrithik Roshan.I know the movie is "defence aspirants' " must watch but i think everybody should watch this at least once. And yea since some part of the movie is shot in the IMA,so those scenes are priceless.
There is a scene in the movie where the protagonist while standing on a cliff tells his girlfriend that my aim for rest of my life is to re capture this hill for my country (while pointing towards peak 5179). No dialogues were exchanged after that but the emotions could give you goose bumps. Lakshya is story of a spoiled immature brat who doesn't have any aim in his life until he decides to join Indian Army. Set against a backdrop of 1999 Kargil war between India and Pakistan, it is perhaps one of the best Indian war drama film ever made. Well written by Javed Akhtar (of Salim – Javed fame) and brilliantly directed by Farhan Akhtar, Lakshya can be coined as one of the highly underrated Indian war films ever made. The beauty of the film lies in the cast which is headed by Hrithik Roshan playing as the dashing Indian Army soldier and lover boy of Preity Zinta who plays an aggressive Indian journalist (definitely inspired by Barkha Dutt). They are equally supported by Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Om Puri and Amrish Puri ( in a very special appearance). Film's music , superbly directed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, puts life in to the characters. The film would be incomplete if cinematographer Christopher Popp and action supervisor Shyam Kaushal dint give us a splendid climax.Did I thank Prabhudeva!
Lakshya (aim) is the exemplary story of a carefree as well as careless youth, Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan) who is in love with Romila Dutta (Preity Zinta) but she finds it difficult to spend her life with a person like Karan who does not have any aim (LAKSHYA) in his life and happy to spend a lazy life on the strength of the money earned by his father. On the contrary, Romila has an aim for herself - to become a successful news-channel correspondent. Karan does not take the things seriously and joins the army casually only to run away from the Indian Military Academy within a few days due to the hard training and strict discipline there. This lack of an aim or LAKSHYA in his life distances Romila from him. But once he realizes that an aimless life is not worthwhile and his way of life needs to be changed for the better, he rejoins the army and gets an aim during the Kargil war of 1999. He successfully accomplishes his aim and being an Indian hero, gets the love of his life, i.e., Romila too.The message of Lakshya is pretty clear and exemplary for one and all. Though it's established now that our lives are without aims from the side of Nature (or Almighty), it's in our own interest to have some aim for us. The aim should be a positive one (and not something unlawful) which will provide a direction to our life and activities. There has to a vision for our life sans which the life may be like a rudderless vessel drifting on the waters at the mercy of the waves and tides. Setting a goal makes the life of the concerned person meaningful. Thereafter the life is lived and not spent. And setting a goal does not mean just earning a living (as most of the Indians understand and follow). It's much more. It helps us in growing-up and understanding ourselves. Finally, each one of us has to die some day. At that moment, there should be a satisfaction that a life has been well-lived and something worthwhile has been done. Then the death will also be peaceful and meaningful.A country like ours which is studded with youth power, requires youths moving ahead with one or the other productive aim in their sight, one or the other pleasant dream in their eyes. That dream fills colour in the sketch of the individual's life. And that's what makes his life beautiful, meaningful and satisfactory. And of course ! Productive for the society and the nation. This is what Lakshya underscores and that's the biggest strength of the movie. After his maiden venture - Dil Chaahta Hai (2001), Lakshya came as the second venture of Farhaan Akhtar who is the son of the legendary script-writer and Shaayar, Jaaved Akhtar. Since Dil Chaahta Hai was a box office hit and critically acclaimed too, comparisons were natural with that. And Lakshya, despite being a good movie made on a good theme, could not live up to the expectations. The subject has been handled dryly and despite the hero's final triumph in the war (capturing point no. 5179), the director could not convince the audience at large. The big question remains in the end whether winning one strategic point in the war fulfilled the objective of the movie. Should there not be a larger aim in life ? Further, I don't think anybody can join, leave and then rejoin the military academy so easily as shown in the movie. The on-screen chemistry of the hero and the heroine as well as their relationship in the story could not be exasperated to the optimum. Despite casting stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri, Amrish Puri and Boman Irani; the director could not tap their potential and they were reduced to supporting actors in insignificant roles. The movie is good in patches. All the same, it has the flavour of an idealistic movie and deserves admiration. Unlike DCH, the entertainment value of Lakshya is low.Though the chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta has not been developed properly on the screen, both of them have delivered power-packed performances individually. Hrithik has demonstrated once again that given a good role, he is unmatchable. And Preity who has been given the get-up of the ace journo Barkha Dutt, has also done her part pretty well. As said earlier, many talented actors have been wasted in supporting roles but nobody has disappointed through his acting.Technically the movie is good but considering the gravity of the Kargil war episode, the work should have been better. Action and thrills are just OK. Length is also not too much. Dialogs are neither great, nor bad. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy could not create the Dil Chaahta Hai magic in their musical score. However Main Aisa Kyon Hoon, Kandhon Se Milte Hain Kandhe, Agar Main Kahoon, Kitni Baatein Yaad Aati Hain etc. are according to the mood of the movie. Background score is also in order. All in all, Lakshya though not a great movie, is laudable due to its subject matter and certain plus points. Let's have some aim. Let's have some dream. Let's make our lives meaningful. Everyone may not be fortunate enough to have his cherished dream fulfilled but as Ajay Devgan (as the martyr Captain Manoj Pandey) says in LOC-Kargil (2003) to his superior officer - 'Some goals are so worthy that it's glorious even to fail'.So true ! Hit or miss, there should be a LAKSHYA worth aiming at.
If you want to see the beauty of the war torn area of northern India, you have to get the blue ray DVD of this one. The way farhan shows the peaks and the valleys of kargil, its breath taking. The movie begins with the protagonist going to his posting. I was sold in the initial 15 minutes. The jeep going through different valleys and mountains showing off the grandeur of Himalayas pictured with full justice to the scenery. I was lucky enough to watch the movie on the big screen and it was jaw dropping good. this movie hits you at many levels. But I would have to say the best part is the cinematography.Even later when he is trying to show the war even then its shown with impeccable brilliance.the Shots of the army helicopters and the gun shots at nights, you have to see it to believe it. But that's not all, it also has a gripping story, Hrithik fits just into the role of a zero to hero perfectly. good luck for your future work farhan.
