The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat
The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat
Likely in June 1897, a group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Spacemen, Go-go Girls and the True Meaning of Christmas (2004) ** 1/2 (out of 4)A couple spacemen from Uranus lands on Earth where they need Mistletoe to take back to their planet for a war. Soon some private eye Go-Go dancers are on the case and trying to track them down.Brett Kelly's film runs just over thirty-minutes and if you come into it expecting the work of Stanley Kubrick then it's your own fault. This here is clearly a low-budget send-up of previous decades science fiction movies and for the most part I thought it was mildly entertaining. It's certainly not ground-breaking but as long as you don't take the film serious you should get a few laughs out of it.The film is obviously trying to poke fun at its low-budget and this is obvious just by looking at the aliens. They're wearing normal clothes and just some cheap fake antenna eyes on their head. The spaceship is obviously a model and there's nothing here meant to be passed off as some sort of high art film. The dialogue is quite campy and the performances are fun-natured for what they are. And yeah, Brinke Stevens appears in a couple scenes. As long as you know what you're getting into then you should be able to have some fun with this "C" movie.

Sci-Fi comedies don't happen as often as I'd like, but when they do, they sure do pack a punch. I watched this flick quite a few times and even after I have turned the VCR off, I tend to continuously laugh my ass off. Not many comedies does that for me, seriously. I think the only thing I wish was that it lasted longer than 45 minutes, but what can you do? Brett Kelly, the mastermind behind Dudez Productions, did such an amazing job with this film and his character was one of the funniest that I have ever seen. The whole cast did an exceptional job and I was so happy to see Brinke Stevens in this movie. There's one scene in this film that was so outrageous that I don't even wanna mention it. Don't want to ruin the surprise for the people that haven't seen it yet. Believe me though, you will laugh so hard. With witty dialog, great acting, very cool music and some very funny special effects, SPACEMEN, GO-GO GIRLS AND THE TRUE MEANING OF Christmas is one flick that's not to be missed.
