Neil Hamburger: Western Music and Variety
Neil Hamburger: Western Music and Variety
Neil Hamburger is a two-bit stand-up with a bad comb-over--an aging, phlegmy jokester with a penchant for cheap celebrity jabs. He's also the brilliantly odd creation of Gregg Turkington, a decidedly more gifted comedian who has found a loyal cult following for his Tony Clifton-esque character. In this concert release, Hamburger performs a handful of twangy country tunes alongside the Too-Good-For-Neil-Hamburger Band, a name that speaks the truth: the back-up group includes veteran rockers Prairie Prince, David Gleason, and Atom Ellis.

In Burma, many people believe in ghost spirits called NATs. They are said to possess the power to assist or devastate the lives of those who recognize them. A PWE is a ceremony held to appease a Nat. Pwes are arranged daily throughout Burma for many purposes including the achievement of success in business, a happy marriage, or improving one's health. A Nat is summoned through a Kadaw; the flamboyant and charismatic master of the Pwe dressed in elegant costume. The Kadaw is a spirit medium, dancer, storyteller, and magician who exposes the crowd to a living incarnation of the Nat brought forth through opening ritual and careful observance of tradition.

As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

Now, before I start going on about this, I must first say that I downloaded a weird edition of it, so only have Céline n Anastacia's duet, Cher, Shakira, Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks, Céline Dion then the final Elvis tribute medley. The duet at the start was an interesting opening, as to my surprise their voices went quite well together, although it wasn't anything shockingly amazing.Cher was very good i felt, and she doesn't sound anything like a man as a previous buffoon commented. She offered a brilliant performance - as always - but sadly set the bar a tad high for - or as my copy has as the next performance - Shakira.AWFUL. That girl's voice made me cringe! She should NOT have been on this show.Probably my favourite part of the show was the Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks. I love duets, and this one blew me away. Obviously Stevie Nicks is far better than the Dixie Chicks, but they complemented each other well, and the vocal power of Nicks made the DC cover of Landslide SO much better.Céline Dion was good of course, but I tend to skip this part as I can only stand her in small doses. A strong performance however, I must admit. The finale was very good i thought (except Shakira's vulgar warbling of course), especially Anastacia and Cher, who really put their all into their performance and were brilliant.Definitely a thumbs-up from me.

This really sucked. Cher blew and sounded like a man. Cyndi Lauper didnt help her all that much. Celine Dion just thought she was doing great along with Anastecia. Shakira just uugggh someone plugg my ears. The Dixie Chicks decided to have the Queen of rock and Roll sing the most beautiful song with them. Stevie was beautiful but my only problem was Natalie maines blowing her out. But in the End she got the biggest applause like she does everywhere she goes so the show was only good with the Queen.

The first I heard that all these Divas were going to be together my heart started to pound so fast that it almost jumped out of my mouth. Thank God that didn't happen because it would be worth it. The best Diva of them all was without any doubt Ellen DeGeneres, who was hilarious and...absolutely amazing. This woman has a capacity to put a happy smile in your face unlike lots of other people. She managed to keep funny and new throughout the whole show. For me, she stole the show. The second biggest Diva of the night was Celine Dion, which with her magnificent voice blew me away. This singer doesn't need vocal effects, play back, vocoder or whatever...she's got it all what it takes to rock an audience with a great performance. This was exacly what she did. The highlight of the show, for me was...Cher. But not her Song for The Lonely or Believe not even Turn Back Time performance. Her best performance of the night was when she came out dressed as Elvis with a voice that gave me butterflies...inside. She was beautiful, funny, incredible and totally DIVA! But Cher wasn't all that great, her Believe performance, as far as I'm concerned was a total disappointment in that, she only sang parts of it live, and for a woman who's been singing since she was 16, it's a real embarrassment. Also, her voice sounded awful during (This is) The Song For The Lonely and the back-up singers ruined a part of the performance. Cyndi Lauper was spectacular...she was so cool. It should have been Cyndi Lauper with Cher, not Cher with Cyndi Lauper. Because, I thought her performance on Turn Back Time was much better than Cher's and also because Cyndi is 100% DIVA. The rest of the Divas, were ok for me, nevertheless, I'm not a big fan of them. Indeed a show you have to watch, but seriously, i was hoping it could have been better. Thank you!
