A waste of 90 minutes of my life
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
There's a very strange and frightening murder series going on: young brides all of a sudden faint and die during their wedding ceremony - the nightmare of every young couple and their parents... But not enough with that: the bodies of the brides are stolen practically right from the altar! But a cheeky girl reporter finally finds a clue: an orchid with a strange smell, and she soon finds out that every one of the brides wore an orchid like this. And so, determined to get out of her gossip column job at last and into the REAL (yellow press) journalism, she finds out who grows these rare orchids, and ventures right into the lion's den - where she meets a perfect, but somehow reserved gentleman and his beautiful, but obviously psychologically disturbed wife. But what she doesn't know yet: this gentleman is the same man who peeps grinning out of the hearse every time it takes away the bodies of the dead brides...Here Bela Lugosi REALLY seems to be in his element: the stately, well-mannered, but somehow sinister gentleman who turns out to be something COMPLETELY different at the end - but not a blood-thirsty monster as we may suspect, but a caring, obeying husband; only not in the USUAL way...This is one of the 'serious' movies that Bela made for Monogram - and he DID take it serious. His performance is excellent, and even if the script at a close look does show some flaws, the direction is perfect: the classic, haunting atmosphere of doom seems to hang above everyone's head - but will fate spare anybody? Find out for yourself - it's REALLY worth watching, a 'must' for every fan of classic horror!
I really enjoyed this one,, not a classic by any stretch but way better than the amazing mr. x . this one had me laughing all the way,, a news reporter from the society page is assigned the task of figuring out why and who keeps killing virgin young brides, then proceeds to steal the corpse away to an unknown location for as yet unknown purpose. Bela Lugosi does his usual good acting in this acting his usual creepy self. their are many interesting characters in here and all with very interesting parts throughout the movie. it was full of laughs and very enjoyable to watch throughout. without getting into why the corpses are taken away, and to what they are used for I will have to let you watch this and see what you all think about it, I personally loved this movie.
This movie is about a crazed doctor who lives in one of those American castles and kidnaps women right before or after the 'I do' in their wedding! What a mad man, though I can only imagine the grooms afterward going 'phew'. This film stars Bela Lugosi as a doctor who has a very temperamental wife that is in need of constant injections to keep her looking young. To bad these injections do nothing for her horrid personality. Lugosi is assisted by one normal guy we never get to know all that well and a strange old woman and her two sons. One a little person, the other a hunchback. Why she helps him when he treats her so horribly is beyond me, seriously he has a huge castle and makes her and her sons sleep in the same small room. Well a reporter is able to track the good doctor down while the police apparently can not put two and two together in this one. I tend to think this film was written by a journalist. Well the reporter heads up to the castle, where you have all the atypical castle scenes that are present in every freaking castle movie! Hidden passages, coffins, and huge basements! It also has the optional lab present in most Frankenstein films, what it does not have is a bunch of scares. The film just can not deliver any and you are left with a woman roaming a castle with a friendly doctor who may or may not be involved! He could be just incredibly stupid! It is cool to see Bela Lugosi, but beyond that it just is not all that interesting.
This low-budget cheapy is from the days when Bela was pretty hard up for roles, but it has a certain charm. The basic plot is that Lugosi is a mad scientist with an aging wife whose beauty he is determined to preserve forever. Apparently, the way to do this is by extracting some chemical from young women that makes them beautiful. The height of discretion, Bela decides to kidnap brides at the altar – because it's easy to find them, I guess, when they are the center of attention and surrounded by people. His clever plan is challenged by a young go-getting female reporter who seems just as interested in using her job to secure a doctor for a husband as in solving the case, her comedy-relief photographer buddy, and the inevitable bland love interest. Luckily, Lugosi has a dysfunctional degenerate white trash family to help him out, and he hires street people to distract the police. Great movie making ,this is not, but it is good for some fun.
