It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The first must-see film of the year.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
This movie's lead-up was pretty decent. I stopped even wondering if it would be scary after the section where the four student "ghost hunters" talk on camera about why they're qualified to investigate a haunted house. That's not the part that stopped me. The part that stopped me was when the four "qualified" individuals all broke down and started throwing panic fits after being in the house for less then five minutes when a poorly attached chandelier falls on the ground when they try to turn on the lights in that room and short the connection. They displayed the same lack of qualification throughout the movie. That being said, the movie was entertaining enough that I finished watching it. There are some clever points in the story and the acting was pretty good for low-budget.
There are a lot of reviews up here about people hating this movie, that the acting is horrible, that it is all trope, that is has campy effect, etc. etc. All of these things are true. In the wreckage of this film, is something truly enjoyable. Humor. Whether it was intentional or not, this movie is hilarious. From bad writing ("I sense a presence in this room", "It was me, i farted") to bad acting, my friends and I had ourselves a good laugh. The St.Francisville Experiment is one of those movies that should not be taken for face value, and is good fun to force your friends to watch so they can writhe in agony as you have done when you watched. If you are looking for a good 'found video' movie, this isn't it. If you are looking for a fun time because its so bad its good, then give it a watch.
I watched this when I was a kid (~10 yrs old) and I remember being so SCARED! For one I remember thinking it was a legit DOCUMENTARY! Now 12 years later! Its not scary or horrifying in anyway. There are moments where you believe your about to be scared out your seat but it just falls a bit flat each time.Looking at it again after so many years, I'm able to distinguish the acting as real or fake. The acting in this film wasn't the worst I've ever seen but it was very obvious that when it came to being scared or acting like being scared -- it came across as trying to hard or just too exaggerated.
As I watched this film, it's very believable, except for the chick that looks like Minni Driver, Madison Charap, her acting is so crappy, I can't stand her stupid big fat jaw, rambling on about the fiery white light, this chick has got to go. The character that is in control of the whole experiment is totally believable, he reminds me of the Paul character in Friday the 13th part 2, a very strong leader, and the camera man in the movie is also strong along with the girl with being afraid of her own shadow, (Ryan Larson). I love this film for what it is, and consider it better, and more productive than Blair Witch by far.Blair Witch is lame compared to this movie, at least you get to see some kind of paranormal activity, instead of hearing some stupid scratching at the side's of a camping tent with no visuals at all. Don't get me wrong I like Blair Witch as it is a new documentary style ghost movie, but this movie seems to engross me a little more. Also I do love the wisecrack, when Paul is going up the stairs with the crew and he turns around and says "Did you see Blair Witch?" I look at that statement as a tribute to the original documentary style ghost film, except this is a more evolved version of that film. The chair flying across the attic was awesome. This was a well put together movie, except for the fact that Madison Charap's character is the most annoying and stupid part of this film, the character she plays is so see through, and cliché. This, like I said is the only part of the film that is wrong.I love the cold eerie feeling that you get from the end of the film of the torture chamber in the basement. You can almost feel the cold draft from the basement. Then the final shot of the ghost like fog in that torture room. This totally completes the film. In the end, I love the atmosphere, and also the technique, like I said, Madison and the cheesy white light talk had to go. But I enjoy it more than Blair Witch, to bad it didn't get a worldwide theatre release.Bravo, to all the directors and production companies of this film, you took something that was popular and made it better, I love that. In the end I must say, you always have films that stun your senses, that's what it's all about, there's always people out there saying "Oh they stole from that other popular film!" Well I say that's just called evolution. You wouldn't have "The Silence of the Lambs" without "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", which all evolved from the murders of Serial Killer Ed Gein, which also spawned the film Psycho. This makes you think, doesn't it?
