It's no definitive masterpiece but it's damn close.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Travis (Scott Mechlowicz), Liz (Alona Tal), Davie (Greg Serano), and Jim (Kevin Weisman) are making a documentary about the abuses suffered by undocumented immigrants. They join Davie's cousin Alberto (Yancey Arias) and his family crossing the border when they are intercepted by a private militia. They are enlisted to film the horrors that follow. This is a low-budget horror piggybacking on some immediate modern political issues. It's illegal immigration with a healthy dose of Abu Ghraib. The main characters don't get enough time to present themselves. It may work better to have only two filmmakers which would allow them more screen time to fill in their roles. The most annoying is the usual hand-held shaky camera work with some in night vision. There's too much of it and it's not necessary. I get it. They're an indie doc film crew. The premise has some promise but it needs some better imagination to spice it up. It needs to have some fun with this horror setup.

This film really surprised me, because I usually hate these found footage films. Aside from the nausea, caused by the constant movement of the camera, I find that these films not only lack a budget, but also a decent story and cast. Undocumented was different though, as it was a novel idea with some fairly stable camera work. The story focuses on a group of college kids, making a documentary about illegal aliens, and how they cross into the United States. The group join a coyote for a run across the boarder when they are unexpectedly capture. Unfortunately for them, their captors aren't the police, but rather a group of self-proclaimed patriots, who abuse the illegal immigrants for their sick pleasure. We see a lot of films about how and why people cross the boarder and even a lot about what the police and government are doing about it, but I can't ever remember seeing a film about these vigilante groups, that do exist, and pray on illegals. Prison Break's Pete Stormare stars as Z, the leader of the rebel group and he basically makes the movie. This guy usually plays a gangster or inmate in the background of some random film or TV show, but he's never really the star, and it's a shame because he makes this movie. Z is such a deep character, who is brilliant yet deranged at the same time, a man who is as compassionate as he is brutal, it was really something to see. He's paired with a young cast of teen actors, who have been around for years, and who do a terrific job in support of his performance. This film isn't listed as a horror film, but it is pretty brutal and bloody, meaning you shouldn't watch it if you have a weak stomach. For me, it was an interesting take on an aspect of immigration that is rarely seen or talked about. The performances were impressive, the characters were deep, and the film never stops moving. I enjoyed the fact that this unique film really didn't have any big named stars in it and even though it had a shoe-string budget, the producers really made it work.

What an EXCELLENT surprise from a horror movie. It has been a LONG time since a movie (that I have NEVER heard of) surprised me like this. What makes this movie so scary is that it could actually happen (and probably already has to some degree).I have never heard of any of these actors, yet all of them did a great job. And the director needs to be given some props too, excellent job! If there is one bit of criticism, its in the beginning for being a little slow...but STAY WITH IT...you will be rewarded for one of the best thriller/horror movies you have probably never heard of!

The idea behind undocumented is truly terrifying. It would not surprise me to find that something similar to this goes on near the US border. However, as a film it is just a run-of-the-mill average torture-porn.This film won't win any awards for creativity, writing, or acting. But for those who just want to watch a gory flick that appeals to your sense of empathy it does deliver. The gore is believable and there are plenty of gut-wrenching emotional scenes. This isn't a thinking film. You won't come out of it scratching your head, ready to discuss its deeper implications. But it has more heart than your average slasher film.Avid horror fans will not be impressed, but it's not a bad flick for the average film-going Joe.
