Very best movie i ever watch

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

Bull...I am so tired of people thinking and acting like they have a Right to screw their marriage vows. If you're being abused leave. Do Not cheat first then talk about you need to find yourself later. It's Bs. This film teaches our young women how not to handle problems. So Much wrong with this chick. Great she gets help at the end, but I wish People knew cursing doesn't make you strong. If that's where your Confidence lies and where you draw your power you are still weak. Strong would be not screwing around on your husband. Strong is finding Other ways to express yourself that doesn't take away your honor and Intelligence...On another note and as always god is blamed in some form or another. Funny,in her eyes her mom was wrong, then the bible was wrong. Yeah, Her mom should have left, should have taught her the bible says god Will not tolerate ignorance (ex:1 staying in an abusive marriage. 2 Marrying a man who you know good and freaking well was abusive before You freaking got married) and that he has peaceful thoughts of us not Of evil. Fine. Her mom was wrong on some level for setting a terrible Example, but take that arrogance about the bible being wrong somewhere Else. It's not until the end she realizes her behind was the one wrong. I Hate that this trifling female character didn't even apologize to her Mom or rectify in any way her accusation against the bible.Case and point this film advocates arrogance and masks it as confidence And strength. It confuses young people, young women especially and Coerces them to think the only way they can be heard is by finding Another man who will screw around with them, hopefully fall in love With them, then speak for them. Love is great, but this chick was Freaking married!! This film teaches that we can all do what the heck We want and it will all work out. It also teaches the only voice she Had was what??? Loud and belligerent. But they (the writer and Characters) are so deep, confident, and empowered kinda went over their own heads on this one as with so many other films targeted at us by us...At the beginning and end of most black poetry it's always sexual and misguided anti biblical standard undertones. If you don't like the word or don't believe it fine, leave him out of your foolishness, but don't take shots at him and think everybody is going to eat that mess up. Some of our black people are too busy praising ancestors and rebelling against what they call the white man's god to realize the white man nor your ancestors have a thing to do with where you end up when it's all over.Losing the war trying to fight battles not knowing or acknowledging who the real enemy is...Only positive thing I have to say is I loved the fact that she was physically a very beautiful chocolate skinned woman. Too often we are made to believe it's too difficult or controversial to film women of her color/complexion in mainstream Hollywood though it's not mainstream, you clearly see that it's a beautiful thing. She glows.

This movie was well written, well acted and directed very well. Honestly the pacing was a bit slow, but that did not ruin the film. I am so happy to see a Black family portrayed in its fullest form. They all had their deepest secrets, they were very real characters and even one of the main characters, the abusive husband, (oops I gave part of it away) was realistic. We saw his "reasons" for the abuse and the director did not go over the top. This film was written for an intelligent audience. We need more of this sort of film, its characters are rich, full and developed. Was this movie in the theatres? Why not? It's got the stuff strong films are made of.

Trigger Warning(s): Violence against womenI found out about this film months ago through Shadow & Act and since then I have been waiting for it to become more easily accessible. After all, it has the devastating Shanola Hampton, as well as Omari Hardwick in the film, much less with Hampton's character being into spoken word, and due to the trailer, I was getting a serious Love Jones type of vibe. But, while this film may share Love Jones' use of spoken word throughout the film, it focuses on life more than love.Characters & Story To begin, the movie focuses on Kalindra (played by Shanola Hampton) who is a young woman who has been with her husband Ronnie (played by Elimu Nelson) since they were freshmen in High School. Now, perhaps a decade, or more, later, they have developed into two different people and this causes issues between them. You see, Ronnie was once a star sports player who, post injury, has become something of a burnout. And while he may not drink heavily, or do drugs, he does have demons in him that Kalindra ends up having to face off against.But, while Ronnie sort of settles into a less than fulfilling life working menial jobs, Kalindra is trying to really get into her spoken word poetry. You see, a year from when the movie starts, Kalindra lost her baby and has been using spoken word to cope and get through her emotions ever since. This new means of expressing herself leads to the type of personal development which makes her outgrow a lot of people in her life, and then she meets Curtis Jackson (played by Omari Hardwick). Like her, he is going through some things in life and uses spoken word to escape. He starts off though as just an admirer of the art, and her, but with time and persistence, Kalindra finds herself stuck between what is familiar, though stunting, and an unknown world full of potential, waiting for her to seize it.Praise Let me first begin by saying that I do hope Shanola Hampton gets to become big. Between Shameless and this, you can see quite a bit of talent in her and the range of emotions she displays makes it so with each poem she does, her words grow stronger, her performance gets more personal and she draws you in more and more. Leading me to talk about the poetry. Admittedly, when the film first starts, the pieces didn't have much punch, but as the movie goes on, and Hampton shows more of Kalindra as a character and we starts to connect with her, the lines become deeper and her words get the type of passion which get some type of reaction out of you. Perhaps it is best said, as Kalindra becomes a better spoken word artist and goes deeper with her work, so does the movie get deeper when it comes to the past of Kalindra's character, as well as her co-stars.Criticism Leading me to the main bit of criticism I have about the film. When it comes to the co-stars, I do feel most of them were likable, but quite weak. The reason I say this is because while the two male leads, Ronnie and Curtis, are given a back story, but it feels like the information is simply put out there. You see, unlike with Kalindra, there doesn't seem to be a strong enough effort to empathize with Hardwick and Nelson's character. More so they, and actress Tamala Jones' character Daphne, feel like their main purpose is to make Hampton's performance and character better, than be characters which have the ability to stand on their own. I would dare even say that Kalindra's development hinders the ability of any of the other characters to be more than people who may have a list of issues written on paper, but never get the chance to feel truly 3D human. Even the relationship aspect, to me, feels like all the chemistry and work comes from Hampton's character and the rest are going along with what is written.Another thing worth noting is that the film is, as Jill Scott says of herself, a wood burning oven. Being that the film is two hours long, it does its best to utilize this time so that Kalindra, and her fellow poets, progress over time. So while the spoken word in the beginning may not really be moving, by the end, whether it is Kalindra, Curtis, or the other acts featured, everyone ends up speaking from a place capable of making you feel something in your soul.Overall: Rent on DVDA part of me while watching this sort of wished this was a TV series. The reason I say that is because the writing, despite the film being nearly 2 hours, doesn't give enough for Hampton's co-stars so there can be somewhere near her level and develop as much as her character does. If anything, they are given a foundation, but never give the time to really build off from there since they are always in Kalindra's shadow. But, they all remain excellent supporting roles which help push Hampton's character and performance into something excellent. This is why I say the film is worth renting. Between the drama, the poetry, especially one piece Hardwick's character does near the end, and the lives we witness, once this movie warms up and gets rolling, I think it would be hard for you not to get hooked.

This movie was soooooo good it's not even funny. Without spoiling anything, I will say they dare to rip the band-aid off of uncomfortable truths that have been implicated/intimated in the majority of storytelling in films of the past. You get that here and there, but to have the band-aids off of so many layers of systematic problems throughout the entire film- from beginning to end surprisingly- was so different and refreshing. Heck, I didn't know that my spirit sort of needed it. To have these issues, these complications, these lows but also the highs portrayed so well by such strong actors made it so easy to get lost in the story and connecting on some level to each character-- even the really bad one. ;-) The production, in its rawness, was spectacular. The editing was purposeful. Very well done.My goodness. This movie left me breathless and wanting absolutely nothing for I was truly full. A MUST GO SEE! The main criticism that I have for it is that it's not in more theaters. This is a movie that should be shared with a much broader audience. I hope it's picked up and put in more theaters so I can talk about it with more friends and family across the country! lol This could be a hit for sure!
