Monster Squad Forever (2007) *** (out of 4) Good documentary about the making of Fred Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD, a film that was released to very little attention but over the years grew into a major cult favorite. Director Dekker, producer Jonathan Zimbert as well as cast and crew members including Andre Gower, Duncan Regehr, Tom Noonan, Steve Wong, Ashley Bank, Tom Woodruff and Ryan Lambert are among those interviewed about the making of the film. Dekker starts off talking about his first credit (HOUSE) and how he ended up getting to do NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. He also openly talks that he got this film going before CREEPS didn't perform at the box office. We hear about the screenplay, the homage to the Universal movies and how they had to make the monsters but be sure they didn't look too much like the Universal ones due to copyright issues. Other discussions include how the cast were hired, the various issues coming up with the monsters and even some of the controversy about the tough language is discussed. Some of the best moments deal with the cult following that the film has gathered over the years and it was really fun hearing from the cast members because most of them didn't even realize there was a following. The documentary is broken into five parts even though you have the option of watching it complete. I think the film is tad bit too uneven and at times it seems to jump around too much. With that said, fans of the series will certainly enjoy seeing the cast members as they are today and it's interesting to hear Dekker say that the film cost him his career.

I preface this comment with the fact that when I purchased this movie when it was newly released, I did so out of curiosity because an old friend of mine was connected to its production. I had no real expectations as to the content or the quality of this movie. I LOVED this movie then.....Recently I purchased Monster Squad Forever on DVD (because A. - the VHS tape I have is seriously worn, and B., again because of the connection to this old friend, and that he would be contributing to the documentary portion of this anniversary edition.) I then watched this movie for about the 50th time. This movie IS seriously underrated and am in some way disappointed that it was not a huge box office draw on the behalf of the people who were involved in its making, and also because there are many, many people out there who haven't had the opportunity to appreciate its greatness. Surprise yourself. Prepare to be on the edge or your seat. Keep a box of tissues close at hand. Lenore
