Trailer Synopsis Cast

From PBS and NATURE - On a typical late summer day a baby sea otter washes up on the beach in Monterey, California - hungry, lost, injured. It's a tragic event, but not surprising. California sea otters are struggling. For decades marine biologist Karl Mayer and his small staff have worked unceasingly - one otter at a time - to bring this "keystone" species back from the brink of extinction so it can play its important role in the local marine environment. But the effort has stalled, and no one knows why. This is the story of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's 501st attempt to save an orphan otter. From her discovery as a stranded newborn pup crying on the beach through her rehabilitation in secret roof tanks atop the Aquarium, we follow as Otter 501 learns how to dive, hunt, eat, and fend for herself in the wild, where survival is a long shot at best.

Seasons of the Otter
Otters are so proficient at capturing the fish they live on, that they have lots of time left over for play. And they seem to play with reckless abandon, sliding down steep canyons in deep snow, swimming under the ice in Yellowstone Lake. They submerge us into the lake to find strange underwater spires only recently discovered by man. Other creatures sometimes survive bitter winter seasons by stealing fish from the otter. Actually, they're pretty good at defending themselves, and this program catches some astonishing action between them, coyotes, eagles, beaver, even an occasional grizzly bear.

Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

This episode of "Nature" is narrated by Daniel Stern. It's all about the efforts of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's attempts to rescue orphaned baby sea otters. For years they've been doing it and returning these otters to the wild...with disappointing long-term results. How they've been able to overcome these problems and become a more viable rescue program is the main focus of the show. Additionally, the show talks about otters in the wild and conservation efforts. This is an amazingly cute show and it's impossible not to watch the babies without smiling. It's a definite case of cute overload! But on top of this, it is also very educational and well made--and well worth your time. I challenge you to find a cuter hour of television than this!! By the way, if you go to Monterey, in addition to seeing the otters in the aquarium, there are also lovely harbor cruises where you can see them as well as seals and sea lions. Do it if you get a chance.
