Sadly Over-hyped
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
Like some of Bruno Bozzetto's recent films, the animation in this short is certainly not great. He's gone to a style involving geometric shapes instead of people and cars and whatever. Now you'd think this would make for a terrible film, but because he is so incredibly clever, it's still an amazingly funny short.The subject of "Europe & Italy" is the difference between how the Italians do things versus how the rest of Europe does things. It's all great social satire and quite funny. I'm just surprised that Bozzetto was so hard on his fellow Italians and their notoriously disorganized ways of doing things.If you liked this one, try watching "Yes & No"--a film with a similar style about safe versus unsafe driving. Funny and very cynical!
