Sai Baba of Shirdi was an Indian Guru, Yogi and Fakir, who is regarded by his Hindu and Muslim followers as a saint. He is an avatar of Shiva, Dattatreya, a Satguru and the next incarnation of Kabir. HE tried to embrace and reconcile Hinduism and Islam. Sai Baba lived in a mosque was buried in a Hindu temple, practiced Hindu and Muslims rituals.

The film takes place in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi (the city, once known as Banaras, serves as a destination for the pilgrimage of millions of Hindu worshippers annually) and is centered around the relationship of a young woman with her parents and her lover. The storyline also has a strong religious dimension. Most of the film was shot in Varanasi, with some scenes shot in Mauritius.
