How sad is this?
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Perusing the reviews I see positive and negative. I'd bet my next paycheck that the more glowing reviews are from the most experienced writers. The characters are dead on representations of several common personality types and varying levels of talent likely to be found in any group of writers and writer wannabes. Some of the characterizations are exaggerated for comic effect, but anyone who's walked the walk in Hollywood or the publishing industry will recognize the doctor slash idea man and the writer who's never read a book, the nasty jealousies and ego bashing, the agents and successful writers besieged by hopeless desperadoes and the pay-to-publish scams.Chris Klein and Kaley Cuoco give nuanced performances that stand out among the over-the-top supporting characters. The only big complaint I have is that the writer of this writers movie only gets fourth bill behind the director and producer credits and the director's producing credit, the first two of which are inexplicably repeated after an interstitial closing clip. Fittingly ironic, I suppose.
I saw the movie before reading the reviews. I'm not sure if I saw the same move as some who reviewed it here. Yes, it's over the top humor. Yes, it's too predictable. Yes, the characters are over done and stereotypes. All that is true. However, for me, there is so much truth in the humor, none of the other things matter. The acting was excellent, some of the lines are classic. If you are in a writers group like I am, or have been published, you cant help but laugh out loud if you have any humor at all. I will say being it was an indie film yet take such hard swipes at self publishing was a bit odd, but that would be a minor point. I loved this movie.
"This group really is all for one and one for all." Hannah Rinaldi (Cuoco) has just been accepted into a writer's group. The group is full of aspiring writers who are all excellent in their own minds. Each writer is trying to make their own path to stardom and being published. When Hannah gets a break the rest of the group becomes jealous and the real personalities are shown. I have to start by saying that I thought this was very funny and I laughed a lot, on the other hand though this is not for everyone. The movie is a "mock-umentary" and is very much like Best In Show or Mighty Wind. The humor is for a select group but if you are into this type of comedy you will love this movie. Each character is funny but Dennis Farina's Tom Clancy type character really steals the movie and this is worth watching just for him. Overall, very very funny but again, for a select group of people. If you like the Christopher Guest improv movies like Best In Show you will like this. I laughed a lot. I give this a B+.
Several months earlier I'd seen clips of this film which promised, laughter, pathos, and generally good fun. Now that I've seen the movie I can honestly say that it delivered on all this- and more, much more. The characters are memorable, the story breezes along at a nice pace with humorous dialog mixed at times with poignant drama that lingers with you. An excellent film is a combination of many elements, and this film has the best of them: great directing by Ellie Kanner, who has demonstrated in A.A. that she really understands comedy; a wonderful cast headed up by the talented Kaley Cuoco and Chris Klein- a thinking man's Woody Allen; and a screenplay by Dave Congalton which scores on all levels. The pacing is great, as was the comic timing, and photographic wise the film looked rich and beautiful- utilizing the Southern California locations to their maximum. A must see film.
