Absolutely the worst movie.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
I think this is a cute comedy - a clear variation made in 1982 of the Gilbert and Sullivan 'Pirates of Penzance'. This movie lends itself more to teenage girls. It is a fun movie! My daughter loved it - probably because it gave her someone to look up to or fantasize emulating. My daughter liked the costumes. There was no swearing, no blood or violence. It was good clean fun. The music and singing was a big hit for our family while watching it. The movie was not a big hit, the acting was not great, no-one got any big awards. But it was a feel good movie that was exciting for young teenagers to watch. It took a long time to come to DVD. I wish it was available on Vudu.
Mabel Stanley (Kristy McNichol) is a homely shy teenage girl who comes with her outgoing friends to a pirate festival. The bare chested swordplay instructor (Christopher Atkins) invites her on a boat ride. The girls take him and the boat out leaving Mabel behind. She tries to catch up in a small sailboat and falls into the sea. She's washed up on a beach dreaming an old timey pirate fantasy. Frederic (Atkins) is the young apprentice of the Pirate King (Ted Hamilton) but he refuses to join them on his 21st birthday. Pirates had killed his parents and vows to exterminate all pirates. They send him off on a row boat. Mabel is the youngest daughter of Major-General Stanley (Bill Kerr) and by custom must be the last to marry. It definitely is high on the cheesy camp factor. It's fun and delightful if you're in the mood. Who isn't in love with McNichol back then? And Atkins is fully in his hunky beachy curly hair. It is self-aware and a fun broad spoof. If you're a Gilbert and Sullivan purist, this is going to grate on your nerves. How dare they spoof such an institution as 'The Pirates of Penzance'. I say why not. Pumpin' And Blowin' gets the Razzie for the Worst Original Song. It tells me people either get the joke or hate the joke because the song itself isn't bad. It's just ridiculous which makes this movie an easy target.
Silly, extremely cheesy version of the Pirates of Penzance. It's a hard movie to dislike, despite being a big flop and being nominated for many Razzie Awards. The comedy is pretty awful. You'll laugh but only because it's unintentionally funny. The songs are worse, particularly the ones sung by Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol. Speaking of Atkins, despite being over 20 when this was filmed, his voice would indicate he had not gone through puberty yet. Poor guy! To the movie's credit, it doesn't take itself seriously in the least. The actors all ham it up and are a generally likable bunch. The sexual innuendo-laced dialogue is fun, too. It's a hard movie to rate. There are parts that are good for some unintended laughs but I wouldn't say it's a good movie at all. It's certainly campy. But, as with most movies like that, a little bit goes a long way.
A bit of Australian Comedy from back in 1980's, featuring some of the most nicest places in Australia including Melbourne, Werribee Mansion, Polly Woodside, Palm Beach, Sydney where Home and Away is filmed. I haven't watched the stage show but these characters are pretty Funny Gary McDonald with his police inspector impression, the sissy police officers, the major General etc.. It is a quirky film and things don't make sense look in the scene where Mabel and Fredrick are kissing at the beach landing there is a Rock with graffiti on it. Much of the film is a Dream so allot of the things you see don't make sense but you just take the film not seriously and you will enjoy it. The Songs are catchy and from watching the film it has inspired me to visit Werribee Mansion in Victoria and Polly Woodside in Melbourne City. A Classic Movie leave reality at the door and just take in some great 1980's humour.
