Great Film overall
Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Halloweentown 1 and 2 everything seems fine but 3 and 4 everything changes in 3 all of it was in the mortal world. in 4 they had no Aggie or Sophie. and the worst part was they had changed the actress (Kimberly J. Brown) who plays Marnie to (Sara Paxton) who couldn't play Marnie as well as Kimberly J. Brown. They should remake this entire movie differently. Aggie and Sophie were 2 of the main characters that they had removed. why would Disney make this movie so cheap? Disney should have waited for Kimberley J. Brown to finish her other movie then made it 10x better and less cheap. Disney we can do WAY better.
What a huge letdown from such a wonderful series! In keeping with the Halloween theme, this movie had no spirit and no soul. It's been said before and I'll say it again: Sara Paxton is a wonderful person I'm sure, but she is NO Marnie! And don't let some of the online stories mislead you that Kimberly was busy with something else when it was made. It has come straight from Kimberly's mouth (see her video blog on Youtube) that she was totally available and totally bummed when Disney "went another direction." They went another direction all right - from quality movies in the Halloweentown series to this just-making-another-dollar entry. The plot line was convoluted, even for a kids' Halloween movie. Yes, Debbie Reynolds is great whenever she's on screen, and I'll always have a thing for Judith Hoag since she played April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (Speaking of inexcusable actress replacements, Paige Turco as April in TMNT 2? I DON'T THINK SO!) But the rest of the cast seems to be castoffs from the Disney audition process. Maybe it's just that the Halloweentown series simply couldn't survive past high school; maybe the characters got too old and we simply couldn't make that leap with them to college. I don't know. But Return to Halloweentown started off by going off the rails, and never found its way. Watch the first three and forget this one ever happened.
I thought that the movie was OK. The fact that they actually skipped that part were Marie went to halloweentown for a year to train was stupid. Also where did that castle come from. In the first 3 Halloweentown was not that big. Also if the ultimate power was so evil that it could control anyone and they would have no control over there own body hwy wouldn't they destroy it. It took about 300 years for 3 Cromwell's to be born all at the same time who knows haw long it will take for another 3 to be born. Also hiding the gift in a book on a shelf is the worst sport to hide it since everyone knows that it is one of the first places to look when trying to destroy a room. HELLO!!! If they could find the box that has been hidden under ground for 300 years how long do you think it will take for them to find that one. But on the other hand the movie was very well played out. The fact that they are doing research about there history with out magic is very close to normal because you cant use magic to find everything exspecally when you don't have them.
I know that a lot of people didn't really like this movie because Kimberly J. Brown was replaced with Sara Paxton, but I believe that Sara Paxton did a pretty good job in acting as Kimberly J. Brown did. Sure, she didn't look exactly like her, and she couldn't be as brave as the old Marnie was, but that was just how Sara Paxton did it. I liked the story line, and it was suspenseful until the very end. I liked the character of Dylan Piper. I also liked the character of Ethan Dalloway. I found it funny when Marnie went back in time, and Sara Paxton played Aggie. I really liked the character who was a genie. That was so cool! Anyway, I was impressed by this movie. I know that it wasn't exactly like the other Halloweentown movies since it doesn't include Kimberly J. Brown, but the movie is still worth watching. I definitely give this movie ten out of ten stars!
