So much average
Good concept, poorly executed.
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Charming young Catherine (a sturdy and sympathetic portrayal by the ravishing Sherilyn Fenn) inherits a large family castle and an ancient medieval family curse which threatens her very life. Charles Band's stylish direction makes inspired use of the spooky castle location and effectively creates and sustains a potently dreamy and brooding Gothic atmosphere. Dennis Paoli's smart script offers a neat contemporary variant on "Beauty and the Beast" as well as a novel take on sibling rivalry and a touching central message on the necessary sacrifices done in the name of love. The able acting from the sound cast helps a whole lot: Fenn carries the film with her striking beauty and charismatic presence, Malcolm Jamieson excels in a meaty dual role as the suave, but evil Lawrence and his more pure and tender twin brother Oliver, busty brunette knockout Charlie Spradling contributes a winning turn as Catherine's perky painter best gal pal Gina, Hilary Mason is excellent as kindly housekeeper Martha, and Band film regular Phil Fondacaro has fun in one of his trademark sinister dwarf parts. A lengthy sequence depicting Catherine and Gina being drugged and ravaged rates as a definite highly erotic highlight. Mac Ahlberg's lush cinematography and Pino Donaggio's moody and majestic full-bore orchestral score both further enhance the overall solid of this dark modern fairytale. A nifty flick.
Well Full Moon aren't exactly known for their great horror classic - and with films like this in their resume, it's not hard to see why. Meridian is a silly mess of a film that is as ridiculous as it is boring. It would seem that Meridian is trying to go for a sort of Hammer Horror feel, but it misses the 'camp' mark and unfortunately ends up being purely tacky - which doesn't do the film much good at all. The plot sounds like it might be interesting, but you shouldn't be fooled! We focus on two American students that go off to Italy after art school. One goes to restore paintings, while the other one is there as she has inherited her father's castle. However, there's something odd going on in the castle as it's new owner begins seeing visions, and the circus folk that hang around seem a bit odd also. The plot is never particularly fascinating, and despite a few sex scenes (which really couldn't be much less erotic), there is very little worth remembering in this film. Given the right handling, it could have been an atmospheric and memorable fantasy fairytale - but as it happens, Meridian is just trash, and not the good kind!
This otherwise average film gets 2 extra stars for possibly the sexiest scene I have ever seen in a movie.I'm of course talking about when the 2 female leads are drugged and ravaged....I'm not a fan of date rape but this scene is done in a way that really works...watching the girls moaning and writhing as they are seductively stripped has to be seen by anyone who enjoys that type of thing.Unfortunately then a beast comes in the bedroom and starts making out with Fenn, and that is maybe a bit too weird.Too bad they didn't have a scene between the 2 girls...OK maybe I'm going too far but I can dream cant I?I saw Fenn in an episode of The Gilmore Girls recently and she sure still looks good since its been 15 years since the movie was made.
This film will not challenge anyone intellectually. The castle where a good portion of the movie is filmed does have an eerie feel about it. Charlie Spradling and Sherilyn Fenn play the two women who are drugged at the castle where they live by some weird circus performers. The leader of the group takes Fenn into a back bedroom and strips her down and looks like he is going to have a good time with the nubile, lovely lady but then he passes her over to his twin brother. The leader then goes and strips down Charlie Spradling and and ravages her body while his brother gets it on with the drugged Fenn. Weird!
