How sad is this?
Absolutely brilliant
A waste of 90 minutes of my life
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Well written (screaming bloody murder and dystopian gun battles are not necessary in EVERY SINGLE monster movie), well directed, great casting, perfect settings, interesting mythology, and the ending was just...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! No way! Then the music comes up and you're like, That was so cool!Well, I was like that, anyway. This movie proudly sits on the shelf between the classics Creature from the Black Lagoon and Enemy Mine.
Something is amiss in the small town community of Maiden Wood. Animals are going missing, and people are being reduced to dismembered limbs scattered amongst the autumn leaves. In fact, this is a very autumnal film – in many scenes, the colours are bled out of the images, or a subtle filter is placed on the camera, reducing the atmosphere to a dawn coldness. The soundtrack, too, is a mixture of sombre music and what could be the sound of a hollow wind. Director Jack Teller certainly imbues his world with an unsettling unease.Into this, Sheriff Shields (Kevin Durand) tentatively strides, acting on varied reports of 'something in the trees'. Shields is played with a kind of weighty sense of unease and disappointment. The emergence of muddied hoof-prints running through the area does nothing to lighten his mood. His estrangement with wife Susan (Bianca Kajlich) and son Adam (Ethan Khusidman) is nicely underscored: two people torn about by a tragedy who were clearly meant to be together. Never over-sentimental, but quietly powerful.Windiga, a creature from Native American legend, is revealed very slowly, a limb at a time. It finally makes its appearance during a terrific, isolating snowstorm. Sometimes what you don't see is more effective – but the way the creature is realised doesn't let anything down. The showdown is terrific. What comes after is even better. It's a monster-on-the-loose film, and is an exceptional example of its kind.
I watch a lot of monster, thriller, mystery, and sci-fi.. Dark was the night was really, really good. I screamed at times at my TV- Only movies that grab me can do that- There was a lot of suspense- I recognized the 2 lead actors - Lucas from "Witness" and Kevin from "Stargate Sg-1 - They were both fantastic!!! I really did not want the movie to end! I only have 1 complaint - the reason I gave it a 9 instead of 10--- DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS MOVIE!!!!!!! The ending! If they ended it after shooting the monster.. I would have loved it- We need a good monster movie with a HAPPY ENDING!!! But no- the director had to end it with many more monsters climbing on the church .. Why??? That's the only reason I gave it a 9 instead of 10- either way , it really is a great movie, a lot of fun!!
I really enjoyed this movie it wasn't the same old rubbish involving some annoying kids who go out into the woods & get killed one by one. This was well written & well-acted with depth to the characters involved. The story line keeps you intrigued as to what is going to happen next & whether the Sheriff (Kevin Durand) will come through his hardship & face his demons in more ways than one. The pain of losing a child was etched all over the sheriff's face. The heartache of not only losing his child but then blaming himself & retreating from the people who love him was well portrayed. Yes there could have been more of the creature in this film but it didn't take much away from the film. It is not a slasher blood & gore kind of horror it is a leave it to your imagination kind of film which keeps you hooked right to the end. The ending was a bit predictable but still the film held up well to any good horror I have seen over the last few years. Good to see Kevin Durand have a good lead role I have only ever seen him in the Strain & for all it is a bit B movieish at times he plays a good part in that show & this proves he is a good actor & can deliver. A good Movie that keeps you in suspense from start to finish. 7 out of 10 for me.
