976-EVIL (1988) * 1/2 (out of 4) Hoax (Stephen Geoffreys) is a teen who is constantly being picked on. His older, cooler cousin Spike (Patrick O'Bryan) has gotten involved with a phone number, which is actually a connection to Satantic forces. After being picked on one time too many, Hoax calls the number and soon seeks revenge on those who have tormented him.976-EVIL is best remembered for being directed by Robert Englund but I must say that I really didn't find too much of it to be impressive. There have been all sorts of horror films based around teens being picked on and of course there's the "fun" of seeing them get their revenge. Sadly, there's really nothing fun about this movie and in fact I was pretty shocked at how boring it actually was.The biggest issue with this film is that you have to be patient with it. I was quite patient with it as not much happened for the first twenty-minutes. Then thirty-minutes. And then forty-minutes. Then fifty-minutes. Nothing really happened for more than 50% of the running time and we all eventually run out of patience. I was really shocked because there's not really anything that happens in the movie and once things finally start to pick up its too late as you've already checked out.The direction by Englund has a few clever touches including one sequence in a bathroom that has the camera above the toilets looking down. The performances are actually good with Geoffreys turning in fine work with a somewhat forgettable character. Sandy Dennis steals the film in a more comic bit as Hoax's crazy mother who is a bigger religious nut than Carrie White's mother! 976-EVIL is a pretty boring film that really doesn't have too much going for it. Even the death scenes are rather lame and as far as 80's horror films go, this one here is pretty forgettable.

I was really looking forward to this one! I've been renting cheesy 80s movies on iTunes lately and thought, "Hey, why not try this one." Looked kinda cool, but it was really dumb. The idea is good, but the execution wasn't.So why does the Fright Night kid get turned into the monster? Why not the motorcycle guy? They both called the same number.I watched this movie less than a week ago but I can barely remember what I was going to write about it. There was too much build up and little delivery, that was one thing. I'm not sure if I can't stand the Fright Night kid or if I'm okay with him. He smiles in every scene, it's pretty annoying. Same thing in Fright Night too, just smilin' away, havin fun. He turns into a monster in Fright Night too, which I just now remembered.Anyway, bottom line - dumb movie, I would say only aficionados of 80s garbage would want to spend time on this one. I would NOT say it's so bad it's good, I would just say it's bad.Peace!

i remember when i was growing up and seeing all these 976 numbers showing up on the TV,, mainly they were those phone sex advertismens. i just thought that it was hilarious too see a title called 976-evil , i remember hearing a lot about this movie when it came out, so i thought that i would give it a try, i was impressed by it, the idea of evil coming in over the phone lines, a teenage boy loses a bet in a poker game and has to give up the pink slip to his 48 harley, so he finds this ad on paper with the phone number to call in,, it's like a horoscope , anyway the kid follows the advice given and wins back the money to get his pink slip back,, enter the cousin, a little nerdy kid who gets bullied at school constantly, he winds up with the phone number and calls in , and low and behold he follows the advice given as well, pretty soon he ends up being in control of his life,, no longer being bullied, especially by his ratically religious mother, this is a neat little film that i liked very much.

Yes, it is a cheesier knock-off of Carrie: Here we have our tormented, misfit teen (Stephen Geoffreys instead of Sissy Spacek this time)who gains supernatural abilities (demonic possession instead of telekinesis this time) and proceeds to take nasty revenge on the bullies who done him dirty and on his psycho-Christian of a mother (told ya, Carrie) played by Sandy Dennis, who, if humanly possible, does a more over-the-top variation of Piper Laurie's performance. But Mr. Geoffreys makes this a gem of 80's horror. His performance is so quirky and, at times, so endearing, and yet he can be frickin'SCARY when he wants to - check him out in the scene where he attacks a gang of bullies in the projection room of a movie theater. It's a thrill to watch because of him. Also the bathroom stalking. And, well, every scene once be becomes fully possessed. I'm glad to hear about his return to the genre after the (in my opinion) unfortunate turn his life took not long after he made Fright Night and this. Welcome back, Mr. Geoffreys! All in all, worth watching for horror - and, more specifically, 80's horror - aficionados.Cheers.
