I am not one of those snobs who think that the ''art movies'' are great. As every genre, there are good and bad art movies. But the art movies which I hate are those that try to simulate intellectuality at the same time they try to be commercial to attract to the ''yuppie'' spectator who wants to be cult watching an art movie.I am Dina is one of the cases I just mentioned. This film tries to be complex and intelligent when, really,it's a cheap soap-opera drama.I have to say this movie extremely bored me.On a part,I was so bored, that I slept. The performances are simply bad.The movie needed a better edition and a lot of parts are redundant.I am Dina is a pathetic and boring film which a lot of intellectual critics will say it's a great movie when they do not want to admit they were very boring.I lost 125 minutes of my life watching this crap.If you wanna see real art movies with a lot of quality watch Antonia's line or Girl with a pearl earring.

I feel I must disagree with the previous review of this film. The title of the move is, after all "I Am Dina," and not "We are the people who live and interact with Dina." The fact that the director of this film does not indulge in a more in-depth exploration of the supporting characters is to be expected, as the premise of the movie is that it allows us to witness the world through Dina's eyes, to see the effect other people have on her, and to a lesser extent, the effect she has on them. In this way, the movie is an astounding success. The masterfully crafted dialogue allows for the unique, if subordinate, personas of the supporting actors to shine through while not overpowering the focus of the story: an achingly real, beautiful woman who fights a personal struggle on both the internal and external fronts. This is certainly not a movie for every one. At times, it leaves one feeling as a guest in the imagination of the director as he reads an excellent book; as such the movie deserves an audience that is capable of being swept away by a story.

The pictorial language of I am Dina pays tribute and homage to the great directors Bergman and Tarkovski. The characterisazion is well done and psychologically convincing. The cast is well chosen and especiallyMaria Bonneville is a revelation. The overall feeling of the movie is typically Swedish/Nordic : life is a lonely quest with grief and pain always on the doorstep ,tender feelings and worryfree joy are brief escapes from it.Although the movie can be considered Arthouse ,it is a more accesseble one. People who liked The Piano , The Elephant Man, or Camille Claudel must see this picture. Some visuals are such strong statements that will linger on in your mind , for example when young Dina stands before the burning washhouse and her father is going to the boat that will take him to Bergen. This a masterpiece of a visual that is symbolic for the whole movie and narrative. There are only two weakneses in the movie 1 it`s title ,it`s to simple and not convincing ( it should be something like "Amongst the ghosts of loved ones " or shorter " Going away " ). 2 Dina`s stallion sex with a number of men is somewhat unconvincing, it doesn`t express her longing for togetherness but only her strong willpower. But it`s exactly the two of them together that drives her.Willy van Wessel

I just seen this film today, and I do love it. From the ever beginning, the acting of both Dinna as a child and woman is amazing, and just great ! The story and the set are beautiful and powerful.I see a lot of movies, and I know wich stories are good and connected with real life. Dinna (in the movie) has really lived, and felt and had tried things, and she took the chance when it was there, to try out her dreams and lusts. How many of us does that ?Excellent movie, acting and just everything !!! Higly recomended !
