One of my all time favorites.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
One of the most successful of all the literary classics to have made it to the screen and certainly the best of all the "Jane Eyre" adaptations. The credited director is Robert Stevenson but visually this has all the hallmarks of an Orson Welles picture. He's a splendid Rochester while Joan Fontaine is perfectly cast as Jane, (after "Rebecca" it may be her best performance), and it has a first-rate supporting cast that includes an uncredited 11 year old Elizabeth Taylor as the little girl who dies. The unusually literate screenplay is by Aldous Huxley, John Houseman and Stevenson and the superb cinematography is by George Barnes.
When this version of Jane Eyre is good, it is very good. But that is not the case in every respect. The opening sequence of Jane's miserable childhood is well done: curtailed, certainly, but it gives us enough misery to make its point.Joan Fontaine is an excellent adult Jane. Orson Welles, however, I'm not so sure about. Rochester is supposed to be brooding, but with a soulful centre which enables Jane to see his good heart. Welles, however, is all booming thyroidal presence in a performance of minimal subtlety.I would rather have seen some location work rather than all gothic interiors, even the exteriors!
JANE EYRE is a dark drama that matches the novel on which it is based. The atmosphere, scenery and very strange passion is what in this film truly worth. Passion and characters that is swirling operate simultaneously impersonal and powerful. The horror that surrounds the main characters brings morbid and gloomy atmosphere.Simply wonder whether the substance of the film represents a hypnotic belonging to the dark magic or touching understanding and love? The story is not fascinating, but it's pretty interesting. Consciousness at this romantic horror story would be very cheap. However, romance accompanied by fires, screams in the night and the secrets of the cold trap are enough to spark the imagination.Orson Welles as Edward Rochester is an excellent choice for the main character. He has all the elements of the dark side, which includes mood swings, arrogance, slurred speech and natural mysteries. Joan Fontaine as Jane Eyre is modest, humble and full of understanding. Fontaine these roles just fit. It is almost impossible to imagine any love between these two characters. Unless you bring them to the brink of their own knowledge. One rather somber film in the heart of the story has romance that is at variance with all other phenomena.
"Jane Eyre" starring Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine, and Margaret O'Brien is a gret film. It is a very powerful film and shows how poorly Jane is treated her whole life. I really enjoyed the cinematography and thought that this movie displayed that pretty well.Joan Fontaine played an exceptionally well role in the movie as Jane Eyre. She played the role of a girl who was treated poorly and had a bad life because back then that's how society was. I really enjoyed this movie because at first it seemed like it was going to be a bad movie and then it becomes a sweet and romantic movie and that really surprised me.
