That was an excellent one.
Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
An energetic and entertaining movie with some pretty original scenes although much of the plot is from real life.Weaver is doing a fine and wholehearted job trying to grab the main role, but the role is more suited for Goldie Hawn.Cumming is delivering a 100% effort as general Batista which also threatens to steal the main part. The role of Fidel Castro is also well performed.McGrath as office Quimp on the other hand is weakly covered, although I grant he can sing.Surprisingly the uncredited Woddy Allen appears but is more Woody Allen than being the role he covers. Woody is totally out of sync with the movie and does as he pleases apparently. The mission of the movie could be to criticize CIA's secret missions for the US and does a fine job of that. The problem with the movie seem to be the instruction alone.A promise of a follow-up, this time in Vietnam is made in the end.
We weren't too far into COMPANY MAN when we paused it and started discussing whether or not to bail and move on to something else. We decided to give it just a few more minutes. Next thing you know, there's Woody Allen (!) on the screen and, before we had time to get over the surprise, we were laughing. Up until that point, the comedy had been labored and the jokes obvious. After Mr. Allen's appearance, the comedy remained labored, the jokes remained obvious, but for some reason I haven't been able to figure, much of it became very funny.I can't speak for my co-habitant (who professed not to like it much at all, but laughed almost as much as I did); maybe my mood just lightened; maybe I just suddenly accepted that this was broad, anything-for-a-laugh burlesque; maybe it was the gin and tonic I mixed for myself while we were deciding if we should finish the silly thing. Who cares? It simply began scoring well on my "laugh out loud scale," and I relaxed and enjoyed.I don't mean to mislead. COMPANY MAN is wildly uneven, and there is at least as much chaff as wheat. Think of it in the same way as you would an episode of the original "SNL:" what you're seeing at a given moment may be forced and tiresome, but wait a few, and something funny (however cheap it might be) is just around the corner. If you see this movie, and decide that I or any of the other commenters here who thought it was funny (or should that be whom?) are out of our minds, believe me, I do understand.Maybe you just have to be in the right mood.
In terms of the "quirky" feeling, intentionally haphazard plot, and amusing-yet-one-dimensional characters, I was reminded of some of Woody Allen's earlier work. And I love early Allen. In terms of the production value, the editing, and the strength of the direction, I was reminded of later Allen. I like later Allen, but it is not the pinnacle of filmmaking by any measure. Nevertheless, I fail to see how anyone would place Company Man on the lower end of scale. It is a very funny movie. It trips over itself at times, but there are some great ideas here, and I was pretty consistently laughing throughout. Perhaps people were turned off by the loose craft and high level of script/actor dependence--apart from the over-abundance of locations, this film might have worked better as a play--but I really enjoyed myself. 8/10.
I thought that this was a very funny comedy. Performances were all good, especially Turturro's, but Weaver, Allen, and Leary also gave good performances. Many parts had me laughing pretty hard. Plot was pretty far-fetched, but that was what made it funny. Liked it enough to watch it twice, and would recommend it to others.Score: 7/10
