This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
THE UNTOLD STORY is perhaps one of the most infamous of all the Category III thrillers made in Hong Kong, and certainly one of the films that helped to kick start a whole wave of sleaze and depravity in 1990s Hong Kong cinema. It's based on a true story that happened in Macau in 1985, in which a restaurant worker ended up butchering his colleagues. Two unconnected sequels were to follow, while star Anthony Wong find himself typecast in similar roles for the rest of the decade.Given that this is an outrageous Hong Kong movie, everything plays out in an over the top fashion. There's one of the nastiest and most explicit rape sequences you'll ever seen, alongside some truly horrendous murder scenes which don't skimp on the visceral mayhem. A late-stage flashback depicting the murder of an entire family is particularly gruelling. Anthony Wong transforms himself into a crazed and frightening figure as the villain of the piece, while Danny Lee holds it together with his typical cop performance. I didn't like it quite as much as THE EBOLA SYNDROME, but it's certainly one of those films that gets in your head.
I have been a fan of hong kong cinema for a long time mainly in the popular genres like : martial art, action, crime, fantasy but not much in the horror because i always view hong kong horror movie is too silly and full of slapstick humor so i never take it seriously until this night. When i first time watch a CAT III hong kong horror movie called: The Untold Story that made my jaws dropped,my whole body shaking and trembling with nervous for a long time since i was a extreme horror lover and love to find something that really excite me but also make me disgusted and you guys know what? This movie did a great job at it.For a CAT III horror movie this movie has it all from extreme gory violence that testing our limit to over the top acting with darkly humor mix with highly disturbing twist about woman raping, police brutality and cannibalism then leave us with a unsatisfied ending but fit the violent nature of the movie.A big thumb up to Anthony Chau-Sang Wong for portraying one of the best serial killer in movie ever from the face, the look, the disturbing behavior and cold blooded attitude to the fact that this movie based on a true story just makes me questing our sanity about which is right and which is wrong when we leaving in a world that this kind of stuff can happen ?
Having watched many Category III films, I often wonder how Hong Kong film censors make their decisions. While I can understand why they wish to avoid explicit depictions of Triad rituals on moral/social grounds, there simply is no comparison to the level of brutality displayed in this film - which is why I have often wondered why there isn't a "Cat IIIB" category. If there was, this film would be a perfect candidate for such a classification.I am not really a huge fan of this type of film, but I seem to have gone on a mini "slasher fest" recently. I've avoided this film for a long time, due to the content, and have worked my way up towards it by watching films like "The Story Of Ricky" and "Daughter Of Darkness" - both of which I found to be hilarious and displaying levels of brutality which I don't find too uncomfortable to watch. But nothing prepared me for this one. Oh, good lord... when you witness the first brutal killing even before the title has started to roll, you know you're in for something special.Like other Cat III classics like "Daughter of Darkness" and "Dr. Lamb", the film is mostly in flashback - we already know about the killing spree before most of the killings are shown.I'm not going to describe the killings, as I think that this film is best watched for its shock value. If you want detailed descriptions, you are welcome to seek them elsewhere. All I'm going to say is that Anthony Wong's performance is superb - I can't think of many other HK actors who are this well-suited to utterly hideous, sleazy, disgusting characters like this. Watching a comparatively normal guy turn into a crazed killer, and then observing his descent into madness while imprisoned, it's actually possible to start to have some sympathy for his character. Well, for a few seconds, at least :) The film really only loses a point for the quality of cinematography, and for the fact that there are probably better-made films with similar content. But I am a HK film fan, not a horror/slasher fan, so I can't really compare this film to any non-HK films with similar content. The superb soundtrack, however, is suitably dark, cold and creates a perfectly frightening atmosphere. All I'm going to say to end this review is that if you are a fan of one of the following: the horror/splatter genre, the Category III category/"genre", Hong Kong films generally, or Anthony Wong himself, then this film is absolutely essential viewing. This is one film which I will never forget as long as I live, even though I'm not sure if I will ever watch it again. This is the only film which has caused me to develop abdominal pain while watching it. An utterly hideous, sickening, disgusting and often uncomfortable-to-watch near-masterpiece, and that's why I love it.
The Untold Story is one of the sickest, but most well made films ever. Anthony Wong plays a lunatic like no one else and even won best actor award for his inimitable, awesome performance in this film. The film is a police procedural in the vein of Dr. Lamb, also based on true events and also produced by Danny Lee. Danny Lee also appears as Inspector Lee and his team of goofball cops provide out of place comedy that actually make the film darker and more disturbing . All of the scenes with Anthony Wong are brooding and intense. Director Herman Yau did an awesome job telling the story and preserving its dark tone. The violence is very extreme and pulls no punches in its brutality . There is rape, murder, torture ,child killings ,bodily dimemberment and cannibalism. This a very nasty and extreme film, rated Category III ( HK X or NC17 equivalent ).If you are a fan of dark , extreme , disturbing horror this is one flick you should check out. I highly recommend The Ebola Syndrome and Dr. Lamb as well.
