Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
I was looking for similar movies to "Cube", and this came up. It sounded very promising, and I'm sure it could've been a semi-decent flick, but the p***-poor acting, ridiculous script, and crappy camera work ruined it all.Even Dennis Hopper, who usually is a very good actor, sucked in this movie. But still... even considering the fact that his performance was quite poor, he was still better than the rest of the "actors".The characters were one-dimensional, stereotypical and plastic -- I couldn't relate to any of them, so had no desire to root for them. The deaths were plain boring and even a little ridiculous.Tension and suspense are the key element of movies in this genre. This movie has neither. A thriller is supposed to be suspenseful; horror is supposed to be scary; drama is supposed to evoke some sort of emotion. None of the above was present in this movie. So why was this movie necessary at all? It's just FLAT.I rate it 3/10 - 1 star for the fact that there was no cheesy sex/nudity scenes (a rarity nowadays). And another star for the twist at the end, which was the best part of the movie. And one more star for the soundtrack - it was bearable at least.
OK, with all that booze around, why wouldn't they just make Molotov cocktails and blow the doors down, they also had cloth and lighters..all you need that is th e one thing that made this story so incredible, besides the lousy script, plot, actors endless silence with awful organ music. it must have had a budget of $1,000 dollars because no wardrobe expense, location cost(a municipal bldg in Romania? set decoration expenses, unnecessary etc.i'd rather have root canal than see this again also, the title House of 9 is such a bland name for a story that is not about fashion or culinary, which the title seems to suggest, but then again that may have been the intent, to draw people into the theater.even the "special effects" were amateurishly done.what i suppose was meant to depict tears on Dennis hooper,in reality appeared as a face covered all over with sweat. it seems a shame that such a good actor as him, even took on this poorly written part, and also he is the only actor in the film i ever heard of before.
I don't know if anything I'm saying here actually counts a a spoiler, but I thought I'd put the warning up in case I slip up. Anywho... I watched this movie because my girlfriend told me it was pretty messed up. While it was disturbing on some levels what people will do to survive in this situation, it's not that messed up if a movie if you've watched anything like Hostel or the Saw series. It does however have a pretty decent plot, and the acting was better than I thought it would be. There's an interesting mixed bag of characters here. You have a hardened cop, a priest, a pothead, and even a token black guy. One thing that bugged me about this movie was the pacing. For the first big chunk of the movie, the tension starts to rise as we wait for the first person to die (which is an inevitability in this type of film). At first I thought it was well done and completely necessary while my friends were complaining about the lack of bloodshed, but then they threw in these random music montages that have no place being there. Like more than once. The music didn't even really fit the mood of the situation the first time, and the second time I caught myself thinking "Really? Another one?" And then the rest of the movie seemed far too rushed, and people were dying at an increasingly rapid rate. If you overlook these things it's a good movie to watch when you're bored or waiting for the next big budget thriller to come out. I wouldn't buy it though. Rent at most.
I've really expected a lot of this film. First of all, I wanted to see the movie because I was expecting a dark, interesting atmosphere, some unique characters (the name of Dennis Hopper sounded promising to me) and some weird and interesting ways to see how some of the characters would die.Well, most of the characters are quite superficial first of all. Second, it takes a lot of time before anything happens that captures the attention of the viewer, the introduction seems to last very long, without exploring some interesting details about the nine persons. The dialogues are quite boring and always turn around the same things. When the killing game begins, I was disappointed, because there was a lack of imagination concerning the way the people would die and a lack of logic, because almost all of the characters acted way too stupid or aggressive. There is no surprising element anymore, everybody is losing his mind and control and the dark atmosphere that was slowly created during the long beginning of the film is destroyed when almost everyone is dying quite quickly and quite the same way.The only surprising element is the end of the movie, but the rest is somehow easy to be guessed and superficial. If you like the general style and idea of this movie (somehow stolen from a famous novel by Agatha Chjristie, though), I could recommend the movie "Mindhunters" for you where people die in more original and surprising ways and where the character of each actor is somehow important for the development of the movie.
