As Good As It Gets
Admirable film.
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
Lefty Brown reminded me of Gabby Hayes and Walter Brennan, a sidekick who was much more than a mere sidekick, but that was categorized as such. The woman (Kathy Baker) does not think Lefty is capable of administering the ranch when her husband (Peter Fonda) has to leave for Washington. The kid (Diego Josef) who reads all the western novels finds it odd that Lefty's name is not mentioned along with his companions. But in real life people usually are not what others think they are. Refreshingly good unpretentious western.
It's a good movie. Good story, good characters. You're not all critics that matter to people that just want to watch a movie. Just be entertained.
Lefty fires Henry rifle into the air to get crowd's attention. Lefty pointing rifle at crowd; "First one that moves gets a bullet" (Lefty shoots a man that draws on him.) "Second one will too" This film had great consultants, all the firearms were period correct, and referred to by their proper names, Henry rifle, Remington revolver, etc. And, nobody fired a revolver more than 6 rounds, without reloading!
While the directing and story may not be triple A quality ... the scenery and acting by the core cast of characters would have made this a 8 or 9 out of 10 for me. However ... the lame kid character ruined the movie. I tried to get past it but just couldn't (my patience wore out ~35 minute mark). So sad because (quality) westerns are so rare these days. Oh well.
