Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

I haven't yet seen this film from beginning to end yet as it's always shown very late at night on British TV. What I have seen I've enjoyed but I don't think that it is primarily a Zombie movie, it is more a 'man against adversity' movie and the antagonists could have been bandits, deserters, native Americans, escaped slaves, degenerate backwoodsmen, almost anything. Of course the wife and son thing would have been problematical but not impossible. The one thing that let this movie down for me was the soundtrack. Either the copy that is being shown on British TV has a serious fault or else the film had the worst sound recordist in the history of film. As I said earlier this movie is only shown late at night so I have to watch it with the sound turned down and it is absolutely impossible to hear the narrative due to the background music overwhelming it - by about 40dB.

This appeared to be a promising film, but I am unable to get past the first 15 minutes or so because the sound track is so dreadful, often with music and "FX" running loudly in the background.Where the technical people placed the microphones, I don't know, but this presentation is unforgivable. The narrator has a very low, mumbly voice ~~ to make matters worse.I give this film 4 out of 10, cannot be more generous I'm afraid. There is little more that I can add to make this review up to 10 lines, other than my absolute amazement at the stupidity of the producers in allowing this motion picture to be released as is. Yes, it had great promise, but it has been utterly ruined by the sound track and the MUMBLY voiced narrator who is overly-dramatic and sounds silly.

Unfortunately, Geddes trots out every zombie cliché, hoping that a little 'Ken Burns' gloss can make it seem like an original take. Sorry – after the previous decade of 3rd-party perspective, secondary characterexploration and vampire/zombie treatments of classic literature, the POV is waaay beyond played.Just trying to view the film on as a straightup zombie tale , ignoring the borrowed comic-book flourishes and delusions of Tarantino - it still becomes unwatchable. A hero with an endless supply of ammo, wary of attack yet constantly and obviously strolling into danger....it would be a snore – except the threadbare plot is too annoying to let the viewer sleep.

As he finds his world overrun by a strange plague that brings the dead back to life, a Civil War soldier tries to come to grips with his family's death during the events to stop a mad general from trying to find a cure using those he's come to seek shelter with. This here was a fairly enjoyable zombie effort even though there's some flaws within. The flaws aren't that damaging at all and really only extend to two different areas. The fact that the pace here is so slow is mostly the film's biggest problem, hampered by the constant scenes of his grief or torment over his family, and by the fifth wail of agony as he remembers them the scenes just become torturous to watch because they're dragging the film out far longer than it needs to be, and with the way the zombies are more around the fringes than taking center-stage as there's no big showcase scene with them and that they merely tend to show up only to get dispatched doesn't allow a lot of action. As well, the film doesn't really make much out of it's search for the cure, tending to treat him as more psychotic than doing anything interesting with him, and with the film being presented as diary readings, a potentially interesting plot thread could've been done here. As it stands though, there's a lot to really love here with a novel idea, a rousing action-packed finale in the woods, great zombie make-up and a decent amount of time exploring their behavior, and it's certainly gory when it counts so this one works well when it's on.Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
