Simply A Masterpiece
It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
First of all, the hate this movie gets is over the top. It's not bad. Yes, it could've been a lot better with more character development, especially for Ali Larter's character, Lisa. Had the movie been 15- 20 minutes longer with an actual backstory on why she was as psychotic and deluded as she was - it would've been less panned by critics and moviegoers. Casting Beyonce as such a key character didn't help either considering she cant act even a little bit. She was terrible and forced with clichéd one-liners. A black actress in her place with some acting chops would've gone a long way. Idris Elba and Ali Larter's interactions carry what is a pretty hollow script due to lack of character developing. Their scenes are easily the most enjoyable of the film. There's also a very odd reference to a band named Crudo as a key talking point in a couple scenes which is peculiar considering they never even came into actual existence, yet Ali Larter's character somehow has a supposed full album of their work that she burned for Derek (Elba). No idea why they would choose a band that never even released anything and make us believe that these 2 random people both happen to be big fans of them. That was ridiculous. All in all, the movie worked because Larter's character was psychotic enough to keep you interested and Idris Elba is good enough to make just about anything appealing.Worth a watch. Ignore all the hate.
I have never been a fan of these stalking type films such as The Hand the rocks the Cradle etc. They do little for me except offer some type of banal predictability and it takes a special screenwriter or director to elevate these type of films into something out of the ordinary such as Fatal Attraction.Obsessed is nowhere near even ordinary. I still cannot fathom how I struggled to the end of the film but I feel I should have received a medal for endurance.Idris Elba plays a faithful husband and father who has moved to a nice home, has a great job but an office temp (Ali Larter) has become obsessed with him and threatens to destroy his marriage with Beyonce. You keep thinking Elba's other famous screen character, Detective Luther would had sorted Larter out in seconds but here he plays her with kids glove as her behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and then a detective turns up when she tries to commit suicide. Why would a detective turn up in such circumstance I have no idea. Also why she would interview Elba in front of his wife is even more bizarre and at no time does she do a background check on Larter or check out her medical history. The film fails as a thriller and as entertainment. Larter who was so effective in Heroes is lumbered with a one note character, Beyonce is serviceable and Elba can do a lot better than this.
great, great, great movie, Obsessed is a thriller and it shakes you to your very core. Beyoncé is not only a great singer, but who knew she can act? Idris Elba is awesome in the movie and Ali Larter, what a beautiful woman. Obsessed is a movie you can watch over and over, because that's how much action and suspense is brought forward. I don't know how anyone can give Obsessed a bad rating, it's entertaining and just beautifully shot! The story, acting and writing is spot on and I actually own the wedding band Idris Elba wears in the film. If you have not watched Obsessed please do you will not regret it get ready for the thrill ride of your life especially the fight scene between Beyoncé and Ali, superbly shot!
Others have already expanded on the films shortcomings, so I will restrict my observations to one aspect. This movie really is much ado about nothing. The pivotal event that's supposed to be the meat and bones of this movie never happens, presumably because Miss Perfect, that's Mrs JayZ for you, could not bear/refuses to be cheated on. Not even in a movie, a thriller to be precise. Not even one about an office affair/one night stand gone wrong! Talk about ego. The omission of this crucial event robs the story of whatever suspense, motivation or drama potential. Really, everything else that follows is nonsensical stupidity since there is no there there. Long story short, Big Mac, but without the patty.
