Too much of everything
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Jack Hammond (Charlie Sheen) is an escaped convict and kidnaps Natalie Voss (Kristy Swanson) with a Butterfinger at a gas station. Officer Dobbs (Henry Rollins) and Officer Figus (Josh Mostel) are patrolling Newport Beach with a reality show crew when the call comes in. It's a run for the border with the only daughter of wealthy prominent California industrialist Dalton Voss (Ray Wise) being broadcast live. This does play off of the 24/7 news world and breaking news. That's interesting for a little while but it wears thin. This is basically a non-stop car chase movie for 80 minutes. Writer/director Adam Rifkin is unable to come up with story elements to keep the movie interesting. This wants to be funny but the stupidity usually fails to get a laugh. The car chase is not that exciting and it get monotonous. Also Sheen and Swanson don't have any chemistry. There's a lot of screaming and a lot of yelling. The eventual romance is awkwardly forced. There's also no tension.
I saw this movie a while ago on television. It was late and there wasn't anything else on and I saw the name of Charlie Sheen so I thought that it could be fun. But the movie itself proved me wrong. I just laugh AT it, because it was one of the most stupid, wannabe funny, movies I have ever seen in my entire life! Charlie Sheen's acting wasn't too bad, but he was the opposite of funny in this film and that's not something I'm used to with him. Okay, sometimes you can laugh if there's a joke well placed but that's VERY rare in 'The Chase'. I mean, a whole movie about ONE chase... How can that be entertaining? And at one point there having sex DURING the high speed chase. Of course they don't want people to take this film seriously and it's supposed to be funny, but it just isn't. I can't help it.
"The Chase" is sort of an action adventure romance with some light comedy.it is a case of mistaken identity (sortof).Charlie Sheen and Kristi Swanson play the two leads in the movie.Charlie Sheen is Jackson Davis Hammond,a falsely convicted armed bank robber who escapes from custody. As Jackson makes a quick stop at a gas station to fill up(in a stolen car) the report of the stolen car is heard by two police officers in the store.the officers attempt arrest Jackson, and rather than go back to jail,he kidnaps the woman standing next to him in line. This woman just happens to be Natalie Voss,(Kristi Swanson)daughter of wealthy industrialist DaltonVoss.(Ray Wise)Jackson escapes with Natalie and leads the police on a much publicized car chase, which takes up most of the movie.the ending is predictable but satisfying.Obviously, there is a lot of action, some of it quite intense.there is also humour, courtesy of Sheen and Swanson.much of what occurs in the movie is somewhat improbable but the movie is entertaining and fun. 8/10
This is a fun popcorn Action/Comedy, that's a great breezy way to pass the time, with lots of laughs, and plenty of action!. All the characters are great, and the story is basic but a lot of fun, plus Charlie Sheen is simply amazing in this!. It's just a fun movie to enjoy, no need to think, just sit back and watch, and Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson were cool together, and had pretty good chemistry together, plus one of the funniest scenes in the movie for me is when Swanson gets car sick and pukes out the window and all over the Police Car's windshield. The ending while silly is quite good, as it was amusing, and Charlie really is brilliant at this stuff, as he was the main reason this film was so enjoyable for me, plus It's the perfect time waster!, and maybe even more, hell I would probably watch it again. This should be higher then 5.3 in my opinion, and if you can find it cheap on DVD it may be even worth buying, plus it's well made and decently written as well. I can't believe Sheen got away with holding Swanson as a hostage by using a butter finger bar!, and all the characters are quite likable, plus while it may be typical, it's still fun!. This is a fun popcorn Action/Comedy, that's a great breezy way to pass the time, with lots of laughs, and plenty of action, I highly recommend this one!. The Direction is great!. Adam Rifkin does a great! job here with good camera work, good angles and keeping the film at an enjoyable pace. The Acting is a lot of fun!. Charlie Sheen is amazing as always and is amazing here, he is extremely hilarious, can do this type of thing in his sleep, had good chemistry with Swanson, had impeccable comic timing as always, and just brought of laughs (Charlie Rules!!!!!!!). Kristy Swanson is gorgeous and does fine here, she had good chemistry with Sheen, and managed to be likable instead of what could have been a very annoying character. Henry Rollins and Josh Mostel are funny as the two dimwitted cops that are chasing Sheen, I liked them. Ray Wise is good as the asshole. Marshall Bell is good in his screen time as Sheen's Laywer. Rest of the cast are fine. Overall I highly recommend this one!. ***1/2 out of 5
