It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Great movie. VERY funny. But what does 'standing in the saddle' really mean ???
i found this movie quite entertaining, and even amusing.i didn't think it was laugh out loud funny,(i don't think it's that type of movie)but it was still a good watch.it's a send up(spoof) of the western genre).one thing it pokes fun at is the strong macho image of the good guy.if you've seen many westerns, you'll get a lot of the jokes, some of which are accurate, and some of which exaggerate things a bit,or even a great deal.i've seen quite a few westerns, but even if you haven't seen even one, you'll likely still find the movie amusing.the movie is short,at under 90 minutes, and goes by very quickly.for me,Rustler's Rhapsody is an 8/10
I would consider this more than a homage, but a great filial attachment to the films my Grandfather watched as a child, but it's so much more. It takes me back to a nicer place. More than that, it reminds me how funny life is but how humorous heroes can be. How noble, how great, and how lovingly delicious it is to see such Titans play parody. Fernando Rey, Andy Griffith and especially Tom Berenger play the entire film Totally straight, totally in character, they all show great emotion and give we, the audience, great laughter. Especially Andy Griffith. I have the soundtrack, which is essential to any Country Music fan just for the Tex Ritter/Roy Rogers duet, but the music is so essential to the storyline. I wish this film had been more successful just so I could talk to more people about how funny it was.
This movie is a delight from start to finish. From the hilarious 50's B&W B-movie flip-flop to present day color realism gag at the beginning, to the big bash and ride into the sunset at the end!! Tom Berenger shows his acting versatility once again, this time out as Rex O'Hurlihan (The Singin' Cowboy). There's sight gags and punchlines galore and one cannot help but love the title character as well as his (about to become) new sidekick. You'll split your sides at the demise of "Blackie" and the scene immediately following at the Colonel's ranch house. I'm sure there's many a young boy imagined that he could be someone like Rex O'Hurlihan. Ride into town, defeat the bad guys, then ride on to the next town (he's on a circuit, its his karma) and repeat the process. Why the critics consistently panned this movie is beyond me. There's great performances (Andy Griffith is great) all around and if one cannot believe in all thats good (& that good will always overcome evil)....then there's not much hope for mankind or the planet! **********A TREAT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY**********
