Good concept, poorly executed.
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
It's 1941. Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) travels the country as NAACP's only lawyer crusading for black defendants against the racist justice system. His next case is in Greenwich, Connecticut where rich housewife Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson) has accused her driver Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown) of raping her. Insurance lawyer Sam Friedman (Josh Gad) is recruited. He's reluctant and on top of that, Judge Foster (James Cromwell) refuses to accept Marshall into the local state bar. With Marshall silenced in court and with no criminal court experience, Friedman has to battle entitled prosecutor Loren Willis (Dan Stevens). This is a biodrama of one particular case with future Supreme Court judge Marshall. The story is compelling and the history is fascinating. The actors are all first rate. The actual court case does have some awkward turns. It's a thin line between blaming the victim and searching for the truth. It may help to definitively declare Spell as innocent from the start. This shouldn't be a courtroom mystery and should skew more towards underdog courtroom drama. If Marshall gets the truth from Spell at the beginning, he would come out looking even better. There are a lot of twisting that reminds me too much of a TV courtroom drama. I do love a lot of this movie but little things keep bugging me. For example, I love the kitchen knife joke but their kiss after temple strikes me as too much. I prefer a knowing touch and a sweet smile for her husband to drive home that scene much better. None of the little issues prevent me from really enjoying this well-acted compelling historical drama.
Marshall is a great movie that delivers on an old-fashioned courtroom drama. Great story with really good acting from the leads. Great cast overall. So far I have loved every role I have seen Chadwick Boseman play, he is a great actor and has this sort of swagger when acting. Sterling K Brown is great and one of the greatest actors in recent years. It was different but enjoyable seeing Josh Gad in a drama. I wish they would make more of these movies that follow Thurgood Marshall's journey. The only negative thing is that it felt a bit long.
Every year a film was made, particularly by the black filmmakers about how black people had struggled in the previous centuries. I'm neither Black nor an American, but this kind of films looks more intentional, crowd-pleaser than the actual meaning of such stories. They all inspired by true events and I like that because we always learn from our past mistakes. That's what histories warn us about to be aware of such conflicts in the future.Surely one of the best films of the year. A soundtrack from the film is nominated for the T18 Oscars. This is a courtroom drama. An attorney who fights for wrongly accused black people is now has taken a major case to defend a man accused of rape. Coming to Connecticut, he has teamed up with a local attorney and their attempts to accomplish their job successfully is what the remaining film unfolds. The courtroom dramas are always interesting, because they tend to take a twist at any moment. So the crime puzzle remained the core of the narration. Even though they have revealed some important information, the doubt remained how the end could take place. Overall a very nicely concluded tale. These actors are not you regular big names, but they were awesome. As of in front of the camera, the behind camera works as well top notch. Predictable storyline yet once viewable film.8/10
After watching Marshall Movie a few things come to mind :1) Chadwick Boseman has been on my 'kick ass actor' radar since '42' 2) Josh Gad is like a discounted version of Jonah Hill ... Except not as funny 3) In the movie Chadwick is smoking , drinking , getting drunk and yet hes ripped as hell ... and Josh's character is swimming all day and well ..... you get the picture 4) Its quite a predictable movie 5) Its so sad that this is how people treated each other 6) Even more sad that racism like this still exists ... OK , not as bad but still racism is rife 7) I would like to see a biography on this mans life 8) 'Hey , thats Kate Hudson . She looks good ' 9) I love courtroom dramas 10) Overall , pretty damn good
