Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
I was first exposed to this movie when I was 18 or 19 and a friend happened to pop it in while we were hanging out. I can safely say that this movie changed my life. If you hate musicals, like myself, then this is the musical for you. So creative and so original. This is one of the movies I watch pretty frequently and will always share with others. The best way I can describe this movie is: The life and love of a trans-gendered, German, punk-rock star that tries to become famous. If you're thinking about watching this movie, just do it. You won't regret it.
If I wanted to go to a rock concert I would do that rather than go to the movies. The music was not that good and even the best song was easily forgettable. Although there was some semblance of a plot it was not very interesting and hardly a revelation. In my view there is little to recommend this show to anyone. In the theater they had the speakers turned up so loud that I definitely felt that I could have been at a rock concert if I closed my eyes. Since the music was not really that good having it played very loud did not improve the experience. Perhaps I may have enjoyed this more if I was in my twenties or thirties and rock was young but it is not something that a sixty year old is likely to be interested in seeing.
And that is saying something, because i'm a total filmophile (yes, it's in the urban dictionary)and i used to work in the movie industry as well. i'm incredibly picky and have been called a film snob. but i LOVE and adore hedwig, the music is outstanding (one of my fav soundtracks as well), the story is great. their is humor, honesty, sadness, the reality of hardships and levity as well. it has it all. it should touch you, make you angry, make you laugh, make you cry, all the while grooving to the incredible music. john cameron mitchell is a HUGE talent (as just proved by his Oscar nomination for "rabbit hole", he was nominated for hedwig as well but due to the fact that it had been a play prior to the film, he was not qualified for certain nominations, "best original...." anything, because it had already been in the play). he plays the role amazingly well, touches you, breaks your heart and makes you REALLY feel for hedwig and his/her plight. everyone does a great job in the film. watch for stephen trask as well (as lead guitarist in hedwig's band) he is the songwriter, an amazing talent. hedwig will ALWAYS be one of my fav films ever and i HIGHLY recommend it, even to the homophobic, ESPECIALLY to the homophobic.
I grudgingly rented this movie not knowing what I was getting into. And from the very first frame, my eyes and ears took turns getting raped, getting tickled, and on and on...when Hedwig sang "Wicked Town" and then noticed Tommy kinda hiding but watching, my heart did a flip. Literally. That's when I fell in love with this movie. Then when Tommy "covered" that same song towards the end of the movie, I was practically CRYING!!! I selected that same scene over and over, then started selecting other scenes to watch over and over and over again...then I essentially re-watched the entire movie several times over!!! This is such an addicting movie...I saw so many poetic shots, I could feel the love, and I had no earthly clue that Yitzhak was actually being portrayed by a CHICK. This gem of a movie is truly a work of genius. I recognized the winks and nods to "Tommy" and to "Rocky Horror"! I highly recommend it to everyone, no matter what their sexual orientation!
