I wanted to but couldn't!
Absolutely the worst movie.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
"Bear Island" contains a once-in-a-lifetime cast, is based on a popular action novel by Alistair MacLean, and had a considerable budget. So you might think that the end results would be at least of some interest. However, it's anything but. There are a lot of problems I could go on for some time describing, such as the unenthusiastic performances, some murky plot details, and some surprisingly cheap touches despite the large budget. But the biggest problem with the movie is that it's surprisingly boring. Most of the movie is devoted to dialogue, and the dialogue isn't particularly interesting. The few times that the action comes, under the direction of co-writer Don Sharp, at best it comes across as utterly routine, and at it's worst is downright boring. So it's easy to see why the movie got almost no theatrical release. Only for viewers who want to see Donald Sutherland resemble Richard Chamberlain.
BEAR ISLAND is one of those tough '70s thrillers with an all-star Hollywood cast and a novel behind it (this time by the then-popular thriller writer, Alistair MacLean). It's a virtual reprise of Agatha Christie's AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, with a group of characters assembled on a remote island and whittled down one by one by a mystery villain.Of course, with such productions half of the fun comes from seeing all of the familiar faces and there are plenty here. Lloyd Bridges and Richard Widmark head up the older generation, while Donald Sutherland and Vanessa Redgrave are the fresher faces. Christopher Lee has a minor role as a character whose sole purpose for existing in the film is as a red herring, and Barbara Parkins looks lovely.Unfortunately, BEAR ISLAND turns out to be a rather dull and stodgy production, despite the cast and the suspense inherent in the premise. In essence, there's a stash of Nazi gold hidden somewhere on the same island as the characters, and some of the group members are secret Nazis out to get their hands on it. What it all boils down to is a lot of talking, a lot of walking, and one of the dullest ski chases ever put on film. Director Don Sharp cut his teeth in the Hammer stable with the likes of KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, but unfortunately this is one of his weakest productions; the crisp Arctic photography is about the best thing in it.
"Bear Island" makes the fatal mistake of introducing a dozen characters all at once, with absolutely no development. Who these scientists are and what their purpose is on Bear Island is so vague that I immediately lost interest. Sure there are several exciting chases on snow equipment through breath taking scenery and at least a bunch of nice explosions, but what's missing is a cohesive story line. The editing is so choppy the jumping from one short sequence to the next is nothing but a damn annoyance. It seems as though this was a much longer movie and what you are watching is the edited version. In addition the mumbled audio is at times incomprehensible, and the accents all seem fake. Not recommended. - MERK
