The Worst Film Ever
Good concept, poorly executed.
A lot of fun.
It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
Yes As Movie reviewers in Rating The Movies tell its just a movie that's an additional adventure to The TV-Series of which was not too hot to begin with. However it's also in The Tradition of both The 1966 Batman Theater of which was a follow-up to The TV show that had inspired it.Also in the tradition of The X-files Movie that The TV- show of the same name had inspired. My Mom Mary E.(Garvey) Baer thought it was so funny hearing the people on board the spaceship saying yearns instead of years. Then My Older Brother J.Kevin said to her"It's just their way of saying years."Truthfully,Stephen "Steve" G. Baer a.k.a."Ste" of Framingham,MA.USAP.S.As I've also told on IMDb before J.Kevin came up with Ste for me being just a year older than me and unable to say Stephen at the time and of which is why I couldn't be brought up to prefer Stephen.
Little more than a rip off of STAR WARS, but this still has some reasons to watch. Firstly, take a look at the year it was made...yep, that's the cue for some '70s disco music to play in an alien casino scene (don't ask), plus the futuristic fashions (robes and helmets which look like something out of Egypt) date this film horribly. While the plot set up is initially interesting, unfortunately this television movie, which served as a pilot for the series, is far too long and a lot of scenes drag out endlessly. Added on to the main story are pointless sub plots about one of the hero's romances with a female survivor. I could have done without these scenes, more action would have been nicer. Only about two major events happen in the film so there's a lot of rubbish to sit through before you get to the good bits. The acting is okay. I'm being kind here. Nobody is exactly awful and thankfully everybody keeps a straight face (difficult in some places), but no single person sticks in the mind for putting in a good performance. In fact, although I saw the film only a few hours ago, I can hardly remember any of the faces or names. You'll also notice that there are hardly any females in the cast, those that are there have extremely small roles too.Down in the cast list there are a few familiar faces, such as the awful Jane Seymour, seasoned veteran Ray Milland as a baldy councillor, and Wilfred Hyde-White who plays his patented crusty superior yet again. That guy got everywhere.Anyway as I was saying the STAR WARS influence is huge on this film, without STAR WARS it never would have existed. There are a lot of space battles with ships firing lasers, taken directly from Lucas' classic, but these are overlong and the special effects are pretty poor. Also, why were there explosions when the lasers missed? What were they hitting? Space debris? I don't think so.The robot cyborgs are supposed to be scary but I found the sight of guys lumbering around covered in tin trays pretty funny. Firstly, their faces look like cheap copies of Darth Vader, and secondly, they speak exactly like the Transformers did back in the cartoon series of the '80s. There are a couple of fun aliens too, including some glamorous alien singers who have two heads merged into one with four eyes and some cheap aliens who look like rejects from CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, complete with tacky lightbulb eyes.Unfortunately, some guy also had the bright idea of adding a kid with a robot dog into the film, I wish I knew who he was so I could shoot him. Tacky, childish and stupid, yes, but definitely not good and not clever. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA isn't TOO bad and manages to stand on two feet, and as a pilot it sets up all the major plot/characters etc. well. I'm sure the budget was low too, which makes it look even more impressive, but in the end let's just face it, nowadays we watch this to have a laugh. I much preferred BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY.
For a television movie that set up a series afterward, Battlestar Galactica was really very entertaining. There is no doubt at all that it is a no-holds barred knock-off of Star Wars. nonetheless it has an interesting plot, enjoyable characters played by enjoyable if not great actors, some top-notch special effects for its day(and some truly horrendous ones as well), and a great score. A war between robots and humans breaks out as a human betrays his people for power. Soon the survivors of a vanquished group of human colonies make their way back to Earth to find their "mythical" sister in race. Lorne Greene plays the chief leader wonderfully and his role gives this film much of its credibility. Actors Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict are playfully acceptable and we get the likes of ray Milland, Lew Ayres, Patrick Macnee(voice very menacing), the always affable Wilfred Hyde-White, Terry Carter, and others who all enhance this production. The film end so a series can take off and though I watched it as a kid I don't remember that all that well. It appears I am not missing much. This tele-film; however, is generally well-made and very fun to sit back and enjoy. There are some detractors of course like some corny situations, dialog, and characters. The boy with the robot dog is so nauseatingly unpleasant.
Being 15 at the time when this show first hit the airwaves I was in Sci-Fi Heaven! After seeing Star Wars and "Classic" Star Trek uncountable times, here was a new show that had great special effects just like in the theaters. The sets, costumes and the actors seemed all first rate for a mere TV show. I didn't ask for much back then because to me, it was a good show. Evil Cylons in their marauders with their telltale red eye seeing, all blasting the rag tag fleet...how much better could it get? Well, it could have been much better. Recently watching several of them when the new BSG arrived I found them to be almost unbearable to watch. The plots were nothing like Star Trek or even Lost In Space for that matter. Characters quickly became cartoon-like, with little character development after the premiere episode. Special, special effects (for that time) do not a show make. However, we have to applaud that the show was even put in production since TV Execs hate Sci-Fi shows, and now we can enjoy the new Battlestar that is everything its predecessor was not.
