Pretty Good
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Short review here as most other reviewers have covered the film in detail. I will just say that the entire film was gripping and brilliant. The performances by all involved were some of the best I've seen in this type of film: completely organic and believable. That is, until, the final 15-20 minutes of the film. The ending, and the events directly leading up to it, are so obviously an attempt by the filmmakers to subvert the audience's expectations, that the whole plot takes a drastic turn toward the impossible. The final actions of all 3 of the main characters are completely out-of-character with everything we had seen up until that point. Therefore, all of the goodwill the filmmakers built until then is completely lost. As such, a film that could have easily been a 9 to me has now become a very low 6. For those considering watching this, don't bother. The emotional investment you'll gladly share in the first 2 acts does NOT have a payoff and you'll end the film completely disappointed. What a shame and what a waste.
Low budget filmmakers really like the horror genre, because it often doesn't take a lot of money to satisfy horror movie audiences, who are frequently forgiving of low production values. Actually, while "Here Alone" was made on a VERY low budget, since it takes place almost entirely in the wilderness, it doesn't look cheap at all. It's also directed in a surprisingly low key fashion that often gives the movie a haunting and bleak feeling, which is appropriate for an apocalypse horror movie. But eventually this low key direction kind of backfires on the movie, because the movie moves along so slowly, with very little happening, that eventually the viewer will be yelling at the movie to simply get on with it. And while the movie is technically a zombie apocalypse movie, those expecting a lot of zombies and gore will be very disappointed. Believe it or not, more than two-thirds of the movie goes by before we get our first (good) look at a zombie! While the movie definitely isn't for the blood and guts kind of horror fan, patient viewers who want to see a different treatment of the zombie apocalypse genre may find the movie has rewards. This is definitely a movie that is a matter of taste.
I really like the fact that this is not at horror or splash movie. Instead it has a a good theme, history and acting. There is no stupid heroric moments, where you would think "why are you doing this?" Searching of danger is done when it's needed too. That means you dont get to see a lot of zombies, shooting and screaming which i think makes it more trustworthy.I would like if we had a better look of what she experienced at the start of the outbreak. The movie could have been longer for that reason :)
What a little gem! HERE ALONE follows a woman who's trying to survive alone in the woods. She soon finds company, with a man and his daughter joining her camp. Unfortunately, not everybody gets along...HERE ALONE is a zombie movie with very few zombies. But in essence, it is what the genre was always about: The plight of people in extreme situations. The movie focuses much on the interactions of its characters, not so much on the violence. HERE ALONE is calm, slow, and ultimately very strong on the emotional front.Besides the good acting, I have to point out the beautiful cinematography and camera work (great use of depth of field, beautiful landscape shots). But most importantly, the superb directing: The first few scenes are almost entirely told with images, little mini stories unfolding entirely through the actions of characters rather than through dialogue. Just when this may become boring, things change— the plot pacing is perfect, if you're in for a zombie movie that takes its time... If you're in for a violent gore flick, give this one a miss.
