I had heard this film likened to a Soviet version of Doctor Who, and being a big Doctor Who fan already, I was inclined to see it. I can definitely detect he Doctor Who vibe in its style and in its embracing of semi-serious interstellar goofiness -- and the protagonist of Dyadya Vova even bears an uncanny resemblance to Peter Davison in some lights. Though with its self-contained nature, fish-out-of-water humans, and dry, cynical, absurd humor, I might liken more to a Russian-speaking Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But this is completely its own animal, really. It's a comedy in a science-fictional setting that plays it completely straight -- and any joke is funnier if the joke-teller doesn't let on that he thinks it's hilarious too. We're presented with this series of strange customs and situations on the planet our heroes visit. They're laid out on the table for what they are -- and first we funny them funny, then we start to find them unjust and see how they parallel some equally peculiar and unjust situations that have arisen here on Earth. That allowing of the audience to draw its own conclusions is the way to do strong social commentary without making it seem distasteful, and it works here. We might not have to do funny dances, wear bells on our noses, and buy color-coded trousers here on Earth, be we have caused ourselves to do things that are just as silly in the name of social position. And Kin-Dza-Dza! allows that "alienation effect" to work in the right way to allow us to see that. It's thus filled with indirect points about our own humanity that the viewer is free to either take or leave.Making something as arbitrary as matches extremely valuable to the aliens here is both amusing, and a reminder of the arbitrary value we attach to the things we monetize in the real world. And giving the aliens their own language in which ninety per cent of the words are "ku" just simply leads to some very entertaining scenes. It also helps that the aforementioned protagonist is a complete stubborn, uncooperative ass about the customs of the other planet. It's refreshing and makes him yet more sympathetic, as I'm sure there is a whole class of viewers who feel that we would react similarly. In all it's a very witty and pointed script, and the whole production is filled with details that will make it easily bear more viewings. And the self-possessed silliness and sense of straight-faced absurdity make it a pleasure to watch. I can easily see why this has become a "cult film" in some quarters, and I'm happy to join the cult.

The first time I watched Kin-Dza-Dza I remained completely indifferent, maybe a little bewildered. Only "koo" stayed in my head as a reminder of having actually seen the movie. Then, I had the luck of getting it on DVD with other movies I wanted to see, so I sat through it. And suddenly I wanted to do it again.Unless you are very accustomed to the peculiarities of Soviet times, Kin-Dza-Dza reveals its allure very slowly. You have to WANT to understand it. Just like one has to desire understanding Tarkovsky's Solaris. I second what most other reviewers have said. Watch this movie with subtitles and possibly with a Russian. Or, even better, with a Russian who lived in the USSR. Almost every dialogue between the earthlings and Uef is a satirical pearl. But Danelia probably saved his most challenging thought for the final minutes of the movie. When our heroes leave Pluke's sands, we would expect the worlds they come across to make more sense. On Chanud, a Patsak planet, the formerly oppressed humiliates the former oppressor. On Alfa we meet an enlightened civilization that one learns to despise for their patronizing attitude of we-know-better-for-all. Is there a perfect world? Is our vision of things just, and do we have the right to impose it on others as standard? Koo.

It is an outstanding movie! In order to really appreciate it, I had to see it twice. One of the themes is the Soviet Perestroika, but a lot of other themes are treated: friendship, social & cultural rituals, racism, bureaucracy, communication and many others. Moreover, the film is very sound from a Sci-Fi perspective: The machines look a bit old-fashioned, but there is nothing that isn't convincing. The behavior of the aliens seems to be odd at first sight, but after some time (and esp. if you watch the film more than once) it has a certain logic. The dialogs are very funny. The Moscovites' strategies how to tackle with the aliens and their culture are quite interesting.

Do not behave like Chutlanin! U might be tranckluckated.=)))Kin-dza-dza is standing so far from modern examples of cinematographic "art" that makes any comparison to be a nonsense. It is not only a movie. It is kind of a filosophic ballad. Very smart, ironic and very humanistic one. As a rule, all of those "high-minded" pictures are pretty pretentious and bored. True. But "Kin-dza-dza" is so wit-minded and humorous that you can watch it a lot of times. As for you - cgonzalezdelhoyo - you are to see this film at least 10 times because its gonna be entertainment for your brain.I hope it helps you make difference between piece of garbage and piece of FINE ART!
