Memorable, crazy movie
Excellent adaptation.
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
I think I'll remember most of the scenes in this movie. It was extremely memorable. It was also skillful and clever. However, I'm surprised by all of the negative feedback towards it. I can only imagine that the reason it wasn't appreciated was that it's a Tarantino-style movie, and most people, to this day, don't 'get' Tarantino. To put it simply, Tarantino established a movie genre of his own, by making **movies about other movies**. Every scene references another, in a completely different movie. All of his references are from popular culture. The problem is that most people don't have even 5% of his movie knowledge, and are unsympathetic and lack understanding regarding his personal psychological issues, which also, always, find expression in his movies. While this movie wasn't directed by Tarantino, it's still firmly positioned in, and faithful to, the Tarantino style. For example, the scene where Leonor Varela tries to seduce the Pistolero Presidente across a snooker table, in a hallway, while giving him 'prophecies'. This is basically an allusion to a scene in the original Conan the Barbarian, but if you weren't aware of this context it would just strike you as lascivious, pointless lewdness (which, incidentally, is a popular myth or urban legend in its own right, but that's another matter)...What is this movie about? Again, if you watch this movie and expect to find things from the real world as opposed to a collection of homages and references to the yesteryear's classic cinema, you'll be disappointed. But if you watch it as it was intended - a piece of popular, entertaining art - you'll get the picture. It belongs to the Alexandre Dumas camp of enlightened liberty of consciousness. In short, it's about the romance of freedom. Even down to the arrow-in-the-chest scene, the characters are bandits cast in an exotic frame a la Dumas... I won't spoil it but you will need to have done some reading and/or movie watching before approaching this one.
I thought it was perfect. I thought anyone would agree until I saw these silly reviews. You're all a bunch of mindless plastic idiots copying each other, I see. Rather, you're mindless consumers of high budget Hollywood blockbusters. Whatever. You'll be seeing each other at the movies, where I won't be. Have fun with that. This movie nailed what a good movie is all about. I love it and I watch it often. I like spaghetti westerns and this is an American western in that same spirit. When Dennis Hopper showed up I wasn't surprised at all. I had no idea who Larry Bishop was before this, now I do. I might sound like an idiot but I'm making no attempt to keep up with you elitists. If more movies were made in this style it would get old. This is a gem that stands in the ranks of Big Trouble In Little China. My movie collection now has 21 titles and Hell Ride is one of them.
'Hell Ride' absolutely doesn't do any effort in trying to hide that it's a wannabe Tarantino piece of nonsense (both the DVD cover and opening credits proudly scream "Quentin Tarantino presents..."). So, at least the film's pretty honest about this. In more than one way, this movie delivers what it promises (violence, female nudity, revenge, drug use, big bikes and then some). But it's not a great film or anything. The plot just hums around in circles and I didn't even mind it. Michael Madsen has a leading role. Dennis Hopper is not wasted on this one. David Carradine only has a cameo. And Vinnie Jones has no idea what he's doing in this film, except for looking mean. And there's an enormous amount of beautiful women in it. Considered that this is a biker movie, that's not realistic at all. Oh well.
While most critics were harsh on hell ride,i thought it was a really good biker movie, sort of reminded me of the 1970's biker flicks by American international.a very good cast led by Micheal Madson, and smaller roles by Dennis Hopper and David Carridine.pretty violent and has the Quentin Tarentino trademark.would have been a good drive in flick.features some great music on the soundtrack like cc rider.which was a biker movie from 1971,with Joe Namith, and William Smith,if you like good biker flicks and exploitation, then hell ride is for you.all i can say is i liked it.and i like Tarentino movies.too bad William Smith and Peter Fonda were not in this.but then again it still works.7 out of 10
