Fantastic!
Absolutely amazing
It is not only a funny movie, but it allows a great amount of joy for anyone who watches it.
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
I knew nothing about this movie but wanted to watch it because Kerry Washington co-stars in it and I like her; from myself being a fan of the TV Series Scandal that Kerry stars in.I Think I Love My Wife is an enjoyable movie; Chris Rock was good. I liked the semi-comedy affect of the movie and that it gave the rather comedic of a husband experiencing marriage problems from more of a Black cultural point of view than most movies will. However, the husbands problem was his wife's disinterest in sex and for that either she should have given a clear reason, opposed to just refusing or her husband (Chris) had a true justification to cheat (with Kerry) or divorce. It's wrong for a spouse to withhold sexual gratification without an explanation; marriage includes sex and its torture for the other spouse when its withheld.
The film is good for the vast majority. It's a rather mature critique of marriage that suggests perhaps marriage isn't for humans. Rock plays a hard working banker in a sexless marriage. The biggest problem here is his wife. She is neither attractive or friendly. I honestly can't see why Rock is with her. This makes it all the more frustrating when Rock meets Kerry Washington. She is so beautiful no man could resist her, especially in the final scenes. The ending is a real cop-out. It suggests that fidelity is almost a curse, but it's better than our protagonist being happy. The fact that the end realisation comes in the form of a very terrible song (WTF?) just makes it even more painful. Would have liked more from Buscemi's character, a man happily married for 17 years, despite his affairs and flings. Worth it just for Washington.
I haven't seen 'Chloe in the Afternoon' but as a stand-alone, 'I Think I Love My Wife' made me laugh on numerous occasions. As writer and director, Chris Rock knows how to work comedy. The jokes work effectively. The film has some hilarious lines delivered with excellent comic timing. However, it is the writing in the story development and the characterization (of the two women) that suffers. I felt that the ending was rushed and the sudden happy ending where all problems are solved just didn't seem believable. Also, the problems in Richard and his wife's marriage aren't fully explored. As for the two women characters, while we only see them mostly through Richard's point of view, they seem to lack in dimension. Brenda is pretty much the typical housewife and Niki is the typical seductress.Despite this, both Gina Torres and Kerry Washington perform wonderfully. Torres especially does well with the comedy (her 'duet' with Rock at the end had me laughing out loud) and Washington oozes sensuality (I could stare at her for hours if I had the time). They share great chemistry with Rock. Steve Buscemi provides fine support. At first I thought he'd be cast as a typical (token white) friend but he's anything but typical and a delight to watch. Rock is quite restrained and suitably so. His character is far less wacky compared to the roles he's known for but he still makes you laugh when necessary.Despite its shortcomings, Rock has made an entertaining funny film. It's a good date movie. Rock can definitely guarantee laughs.
It may not be the funniest movie ever but it scores well on a great number of other points. You can count the good romantic comedies on one hand, and I'm glad to say this is one of the better ones. It's not brilliant, but it's certainly enjoyable. The phrase 'pretty good' goes through my mind every time I watch a Chris Rock movie and so it was in this case too. A bit cliché at times, but never over-the-edge. Buscemi has a great character, the completely amoral SOB who's still a good guy deep inside. He pulls it off, though I don't know if he should do this kind of movies too often. He works better in black comedies IMO. Chris Rock is not the greatest actor of all time, in fact he seems to play pretty much the same character every time. The humor is (almost) never too low-brow, and for that the movie deserves praise. Not the best of movies, but one of the better of the genre, I Think I Love My Wife deserves a watch.
