Fantastic!
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is a Comedy/Musical/Romance starring Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee and Jane Russel as Dorothy Shaw. The 2 showgirls, Lorelei and Dorothy, are on their way to Paris via a transatlantic cruise working as showgirls while being followed by a private detective. On their way, they chat up as many eligible men as possible. This movie is a wonderful classic because of the remarkable performances, authentic costume designs, and wonderful musical numbers.Marilyn Monroe will steal your breath away at the start of the show. She is not only stunning. She also portrays her character in an excellent manner. Lorelei is a smooth, soft-speaking, dramatic, well-dressed woman who is very interested in money and all the pretty things it will buy her. She is also able to convince people of her opinions even if they are commonly disapproved opinions. Her best friend, who she considers to be an amazing and loyal friend, Dorothy, is quite the opposite. Dorothy is not interested in money, and especially not in men with money as is shown when she first meets Ernie and she is angered when he tries to brag about his wealth. She also portrays her character as an intelligent, strong- willed and tough woman. The costumes are great. I just love the 1950s era. All of the men are dressed classy in their suit and ties. The women are wearing gorgeous elegant sparkly long dresses and long gloves. In one scene, Dorothy is wearing an expensive looking black dress and her curled black hair and dazzling earrings look so beautiful that you will want to get into a time machine and go back to the 1950s. When she puts the girly white robe around Ernie, it is quite funny.I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs of the film and I like to listen and sing to them even when the film is over. The songs are sweet and sultry and very clear. As Lorelei and Dorothy sit together at a table in the restaurant, Lorelei begins to sing. After the tempo begins to increase and more people join in the song until Lorelei and Dorothy are singing up-tempo and in unison. The two give a stunning performance together by dancing and acting to this song. By the end of the song, the tempo slows down and the audience is watching them drive off.I would recommend that anybody who enjoys Musicals to take the hour and a half to watch this one. If you enjoyed movies like Grease or Mamma Mia because you like to sing along to catchy and entertaining songs, then this movie is for you. I enjoyed this film as much as I usually enjoy musicals, especially ones that were made decades before I was born. If you like old films, like Breakfast at Tiffany's or other old films that star a beautiful and class maiden like Monroe, then you will probably enjoy it. The film is not just for adults, older children may be able to enjoy this film as well. Overall, I thought that this movie was beautiful and it's among my favourites. The ending was superb and the romances of the lead characters were intriguing and sweet. I'm always a fan of the musical genre and I thought that this movie did it right. It had me rooting for the main characters, imagining their thoughts, singing along to the songs, marvelling at the gorgeous costumes and set designs, and becoming captivated by the performances of Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Shaw.
GENTLMEN PREFER BLONDES is quite popular and somewhat humorous musical comedy. The protagonists are two entertainers traveling to France and experience a series of romantic complications related to the rich and stupid millionaires on one side and a determined and pretty-private detective on the other side. The film in a way making fun of stereotypes of ideal girlfriends and ideal husbands. Dumb blonde (she has a valid reason for her behavior) wants only the rich. Sarcastic and somewhat cynical brunette wants only pretty or handsome. All this is pretty well packed with a lot of laughter, song and dance. Otherwise I would have vomited. The director was able to get the best out of this story. One of the protagonists is a counterweight to the other protagonists. Completely different characters who support and love each other. I have a feeling that the men in this film are dumb. Women eventually receive exactly what they asked for. The film has a charm, abounds mostly caricatured characters, excellent dance lilting points and witty dialogues and relationships.Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw and Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee are completely different characters but both acting like a couple walking magnets. Just to look at them and in the second time you eat out of their hands. Marilyn Monroe as compared to Lorelei behaves quite frankly. The performance in ecstasy. I still say that she's a good actress. However, she seems to be too good in what is not always nice to see in the film. Jane Russell is a counterbalance, but not better, her character is even more provocative and unintelligible in certain situations. Both lack of character and charm. This is a fluffy comedy.
The Lovesong of Lorelei Bigrocks;Men that follow like a tedious regimentOf libidinous intentTo lead you to an overwhelming question...Oh, do not ask, "What is it?"Though love is grand, diamonds are exquisite. In the room the women come and go Talking of men with plenty of dough.Marilyn (no last name needed), iconic and larger than life, answered many of the popular questions of her time. Do men make passes at girls who wear glasses? Yes. Do gentlemen prefer blondes? Sometimes. If the dog is man's best friend, what is women's?Marilyn might not have been a great dancer, but she could move. She might not have been a great singer, but her voice was smooth as cocoa butter and memorable. Everyone remembers her cooing "Happy Birthday" to JFK. And her role as Lorelei Lee in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is iconic (just ask Madonna), especially in the number "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend".She strutted and wiggled her way through that movie with Jane Russell as fellow chorine, Dorothy Shaw--a non-blonde. With her usual heart- of-gold portrayal, Marilyn proved that it was not only okay to dig for gold, it was logical. Besides, she might actually have loved the hapless schmuck she set her sights on.Taking full advantage of Technicolor, director Howard Hawks created a vibrant film that revels in the innocent lustiness of a Marilyn (her next film would be "How to Marry a Millionaire") and a Jane (who two years later would star in "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes"). Though the early fifties signaled a newfound sexual freedom, clearly the emphasis was still on marriage, whether the female lead was Doris Day or Marilyn Monroe. This is a lightweight film, admittedly, and it offers little in the way of heart-pounding romance, suspense or drama. Just two beautiful women on a casual mission to find a few carats if happiness.
This film is just plain pathetic and dull. Sorry, fans of 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' but is my honest opinion. The musical parts are very well choreographed, and while the actresses have a very beautiful voice, they simply can't act. Horrible acting performance in the musical Numbers. But they were somewhat convincing when not singing, as futile women. The plot was as generic as it could be. It had a meaningless message and a very cliché build up. The intended jokes were plain dull and unfunny. I know that humor is relative, but I'm pretty sure that that glorifying muscled athletes in a sexual way and doing a musical number into a courtroom while the judge is yelling 'outrageous!' are not funny things at all. It's just dull. And not in a funny way, which is worse. And there is nothing that really can raises interest about this film. First because is nothing new, and two because as a comedy film this one is a fail, as i said previously. Cliché moments are frequent in this film, so if you really wanna watch it, be prepared for the dullness and the super predictable events in this film.In my opinion, you should avoid this film. 4.6/10
