This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
UK title - Shut In. Three men break into a large house looking for a stash of cash, thinking that it's occupant, Anna, is away at her brother's funeral. But she isn't, the tables get turned and victim becomes the hunter. Certainly not a typical home invasion movie, this one turns into something more akin to say "Saw". It's pretty brutal and despite what she does you still have to side with Anna. However the villains aren't terribly convincing, especially the guy with the beard. Saw it free on TV, it's not bad but I'd not want to watch it again.
On the one hand, Shut In (don't mix it up with the homonym film starring Naomi Watts) offers a moderately interesting psychological basis which makes it better than other "home invasion" movies; on the other hand, the screenplay relies too much on coincidences and convenient revelations, while making trap with the development of the characters when the story threatens to stop. On the positive side, the actors make a good work in their roles, highlighting Beth Riesgraf, who displays a solid balance of vulnerability and subtle threat, and Martin Starr, displaying a "serious" facet (he's better known for his humorous work, such as in the brilliant TV series Silicon Valley) with a good result. Going back to the cons, despite offering some moderately interesting aspects, I didn't find the screenplay very satisfactory; I think it needed more ingenuity, or at least, more impact. Nevertheless, I think I can give it a slight recommendation; however, it's a pity that co- screenwriters T.J. Cimfel and David White didn't dare to take things till their last consequences.
A Low-Budget Shocker about a Home Occupied by an Agoraphobic (fear of leaving the house). It's a Gritty, sometimes Disturbing Cat and Mouse Display with a Plot that Unfolds Creases in the Personalities of the Invaders and the Young Woman Defending Herself.Alone, and seemingly Helpless, the Claustrophobic Tale of Terror is Captivating in the Cluttered Environment. The Invading Young Men are all Despicable with one being more Despicable than the Other. First Time Director Schindler keeps Things Ominous and Mysterious with Spurts of Ultra-Violence Mixed with Pathos concerning the Damsel in Distress (Leticia Jimenez), Delivering a Competent Portrayal of a Disturbed Female. She does have a Friend of Sorts in a Delivery Boy (Rory Culkin), who gets Top Billing. But it is Anna's Story. Thankfully Absent of Jump Scares the Horror Maintains its Suspense and Audience Anticipation with a Back Story that is Told in Slow-Burn. There are Thrills and Suspense that Build to a Climax that some Find Unfulfilling. But it's Worth a Watch for sure because of some Good Acting and a Twist on the Home Invasion Genre that is Set in a Distressing House Full of Horrors and Horrifying People.
I watched this movie on showtime on demand, I am glad I did not check reviews yet and just started watching the movie. My protocol is that if I am bored at the first 15 minutes then I stop watching. This movie hooked me till the very end. The leading lady Beth Riesgraf reminded me of Kate Hudson, they even act so similar. THe description was the movie is about a woman with agoraphobia, but at first I thought could she a vampire, ha ha ha, it was just too mysterious, but towards the middle, the plot was more clear. It was a good thriller, and I was hooting for Anna all the way. I was also feeling sorry for Rory Culkin (Dan). I wanted him to be saved not just because he's so cute, but he was so innocent.
